Zoom on Linux with Remote Support/Screen Share: Critical Issues

We have a large number of lecturers at our institute wanting to use Linux as their system (primarily, because they're teaching Linux directly or DevOps/develpment and it's nice to be on the same system you're teaching).

Problem is, Zoom Meetings app is borderline unusable when combined with remote support or screen share. Greatest issues are:

1. When providing remote support to a student, lecturers are unable to type certain keys - such as 's', 'p' and several others. Capitalised versions are fine, however certain keys are interpreted by the remote system as shortcuts. For example, when I press 'p' on the Linux machine, the macOS remote client 'beeps' - same beep as when an invalid key is pressed. Similarly, for example, pressing 'z' on Linux causes Mission Control to appear! This means we can't type anything (such as fixing commands or code) for our students.

2. When the remote support session is ended, choosing to "Stop remote support" doesn't actually do anything. The only workaround we've found is for the lecturer to start a share themselves just to stop sharing.

Then there's the minor issues such as:

3. Zoom doesn't respect light/dark mode and has no option to use dark mode.

4. Lecturers have to re-login every time they launch Zoom.

Technical Details

- Lecturers are using the latest Zoom version 6.6.11 (2052). Students are also on the latest respective versions of their macOS/Windows clients.

- Lecturers are using Fedora Linux 43 (primarily). We have tried both the Flatpak and RPM versions of Zoom - both exhibit the same behaviour.

It would be nice if Zoom started working properly on Linux. I understand the user base must be an insignificant proportion of the overall user base but, ironically, we're having better luck with Microsoft Teams! Come on Zoom... your backend infrastructure is almost entirely Linux - give some love to the client.

I just started using my new ASUS computer which runs of Windows 11 and uses Realtek audio driver. I get no audio sound in Zoom. No other application has this problem. I did not have this problem on my old ASUS computer running on Windows 10, and also using Realtek audio driver. I have gone through all the troubleshooting procedures suggested by ASUS Support and also by Zoom. None of that helped to fix the problem.  Has anyone else encountered this? And have you been able to fix the problem?

Hey guys, I’m trying to streamline my communication and support for my dropshipping store using Zoom, but I’m running into some issues. I want to offer live consultations or support calls for my customers, but I’m not sure how to integrate Zoom with my store (using Sellvia) or if it’s even worth it. Anyone here using Zoom for customer service or product consultations? How do you set it up, and does it actually help with sales or customer satisfaction? Would love to hear your experiences!

I’ve been looking into ways to automate customer support for my ecommerce store using Zoom and integrating it with Sellvia, my order fulfillment platform. The goal is to provide real-time, personalized assistance to customers by scheduling Zoom calls automatically based on their order status or any issues they may encounter.

Has anyone here worked on integrating Zoom’s API with third-party ecommerce systems, particularly for order management and support? I’m specifically interested in automating customer meeting scheduling, syncing order updates, and using Zoom’s API to streamline the support process.

Zoom is becoming a busted, unworkable application on modern Linux desktops.

Linux systems are quickly and aggressively moving to Wayland & Pipewire for graphical sessions because they are more secure than the outdated, fragmented x11 standards.  In fact, more and more Linux distributions are going Wayland-only, or at least Wayland by default. KDE and GNOME are both deprecating x11 support.

Zoom has not kept up.  The screen-sharing problems on the NVIDIA/Wayland/Pipewire/Zoom stack are well-known and well-documented.  You basically share a black screen that crashes your call when you stop sharing.  The settings menus are not helpful (and yes, I have tried all of them).  Screen-sharing just doesn't work well on the Linux client with very-common hardware and OS configurations, and the only workaround is to run it on an x11 session.  This is a notable defect, and the problem really appears to be contained to Zoom.

Hi there,

I'm running Zoom 5.11.11 on macOS Monterey 12.5, and have an Apple Studio Display. I've noticed the Center Stage feature is on when I'm in Zoom meetings (the camera tracks you as you move around), however I can't find any setting to turn it off. It seems that this setting does exist on iOS/iPad OS, but not on macOS. Is there a way to turn this off on Zoom on the Mac?

Thank you!

Not sure where the suggestion box is, or whether this is the right place to bring this up, but--

It would be great if Zoom could add the ability for an individual user to set a logo or virtual foreground while on camera, regardless of the user's chosen background. Like a foreground layer or some such. This way, I could have my team's logo displayed in the corner of my screen and still keep my background of choice, be it Blur, Natural or Virtual background.

Thanks for your consideration!
