Hi does anyone know how to chat with people outside of the meeting room without having to pay?

Sure.... Basic users all have access to Team Chat which is persistent chat and channels along with paid users.  This feature/solution can be disabled by Admins so that the Team Chat icon doesn't even show up in your Zoom application.  Contact your Zoom Admins to have it enabled.  It's intuitive to use right in the Zoom app if you have access to use it.
