I need to be able to see the phone number of the person I am talking to. I know that you can click a drop down button to see the number, but if I click into another app, then the phone number goes away. How can I have the phone number permanently showing?

There is much information to go on here. Are you talking about the Zoom App? Is the
Are you talking about a Physical Desktop phone of a particular Model/Brand?

What do you mean switching to another App? Do you mean moving from the Phone Tab on the Zoom App to another Tab? or switching to another App outside the Zoom App?

You should always be able to see the "Active Call" it he Zoom App and via an arrow that "drop-down" a menu, you can always see the details of the call participants, including the case of conference call.

If by any chance the active call information disappears ( I am not sure I have ever see that except when I move out of the Phone tab to i.e. the Calendar tab), there is always a Horizontal Bar under the Top Tab Menu indicating you are still on a call; and clicking that will take you back to the Phone Tab where you have all the information back.
I am not sure if I understood correctly what you are reporting but maybe you can put a screenshot showing the issue to understand better?
What could happen is that if the call has a Caller Name available, the Zoom App will show you the Name instead of the number, but clicking the arrow you can always show the number. I am not sure you can permanently show the number if the Caller Name is available to Zoom Phone.

This is with the desktop app. I am switching to another app outside of zoom, this is to look up clients that called in.

Yes, I am just seeing the Caller Name and when I click on the arrow, then it shows the number. When I click out of zoom to a different app to search the client by phone number, the drop down that displays the phone number goes away. From what you said, it seems that I won't be able permanently see the phone number.

In my experience, if the name is available, you will only see the name and have to click the arrow to see the rest of the information. If when switch App and coming back to the Zoom App and the Phone tab only shows the keypad and not your active call, or you are in a different tab, you will see your Active Call status under the Zoom App button bar and clicking it will take you to the Phone Tab with all the information like you had it before Switch out from the Zoom App
