Will canceling my monthly subscription automatically downgrade my status to basic user?

A Basic account is free. Absence of a paid license (Pro , Business, Education, or Enterprise) attached to your account does indeed mean your account will become a Basic account.

 

 This downgrade will happen automatically, but not necessarily instantaneously — the shutoff will wait until the currently paid subscription period is over.
