Polling Limitations

Is there a way to  set the number of choices selected in a multiple choice poll?

I am a professional parliamentarian, and I work with a number of groups that could use polls for online elections (such as for at large positions on Boards of Directors) if there was an option to limit the number of nominees for whom a member may vote. Example: there are five nominees for three slots. So on the "ballot" (poll), there are five names, and participants may vote for up to three.

Currently, it appears that the only options are to vote for one, or for as many as you want.

Hello @Goodwiller ,

I believe that you may find what you are looking for with advanced polling in your settings for your host profile.

For more information please check out this support article surrounding advanced polling.

hm. It seems my reply didn't post. At any rate, I do not find a solution in Advanced Polling. I need a very specific feature that is customary in the available election services (such as Election Buddy) - which is to set the number of "multiple choices" allowable in a "multiple choice" question. Both regular and advanced polling allow multiple choices, but neither allows the host to set the maximum number of choices.

@Goodwiller ,

I searched our marketplace.zoom.us  for election buddy,

https://marketplace.zoom.us/search?q=election%20buddy

and apparently, we do not have an active integration with that software, but you may want to check their site and see if they do have any APIs that will allow you to integrate with Zoom. We have over 2000 integrations, but some software companies may work with Zoom but not actively market their software on the marketplace. I will continue to research this for you. It is a great topic and functionality that we should have if we do not already. Stay tuned, please!

Regards,

B!

Still hoping for a solution here that will not require clients with limited internet ability to navigate between two separate apps in the middle of a meeting - not to mention the cost of third party voting options!

Hello @Goodwiller ,

Ever since v5.7.3, we have had Zoom Apps where you can integrate from within your meeting client for users such as this.

I hope that this is helpful.

Unfortunately, that does not help. It seems that one of the third-party providers would need to develop a relationship with Zoom to make that work - which could cut into their own  fee structures for using them.

It just seems to me that Zoom could add this functionality into the existing advanced polling options pretty easily, and solve the problem. Is there any way to get that request in front of the Zoom tech and leadership staff to see if it can happen?

Greg

I encourage you to visit our Zoom Feedback form, which is the official way to share any feedback or feature requests with the Zoom team. Thanks!

Thank you. I will do that.

Greg

I put this question to the Zoom tech team in the first quarter of 2021, they said they would look into it. So far, no solution. I guess if we keep on asking, they will give it some priorty.

Hi @Goodwiller

when you say

"Unfortunately, that does not help. It seems that one of the third-party providers would need to develop a relationship with Zoom to make that work - which could cut into their own fee structures for using them."

Could you expand on this?

Are you saying that integrating Zoom apps that provide this feature isn't a solution to your problem?

Just trying to understand why this wouldn't work?

Thanks.

I am following this suggestion because I have the same  problem with Credit Union AGM voting.

I'm looking for a way to limit a multiple choice poll to, say, two choices as well.

As far as I can see there's still no solution to this. Please show me I'm wrong!

Hello @aladmin

Yes, you can absolutely create a multiple choice poll with only two choices. I went ahead and created a test poll in my account to show you what it would look like. Let me know if there is anything more that I can help you with.

Ha! Not quite. Sure, you can make a multiple-choice poll with two choices but what people are trying to do is make a multiple-choice poll with say five choices and limit the number of responses to only two.

Hello @aladmin

I do not get why you would do that. Can you provide me with a use case? I can take it to the product team and see what they think.

Really? Maybe we’re not understanding each other then. Let’s say I’m doing an election and there are, say, 2 spots open on my board and five candidates. Vote for any two. The two top vote-getters win.

Sure. The poll might be: Select your top 3 reasons for buying a house. You might then offer 10 reasons a person might buy a house. If everyone selected all ten responses, the results would be of no use. Limiting the number of reasons you can select, you can chart the most common answers

These last two examples are spot on. And I am grateful for those who have chimed in with the same problem. It is a feature that other voting/polling platforms include - and its absence on Zoom is the sole cause for certain organizations paying for an additional "voting service" that they wouldn't need if Zoom could handle it. Thanks for your continued work to make this happen!

Hello @aladmin

You are correct. I can look into this with the Zoom team and see if we have any plans to allow you to lock in two choices only.

I just tested this with my colleague and if you mark the toggle required it will only allow you to make one of the two choices. Is that what you are asking for?

No, it does not. Single choices have always been allowed. But the only options are to choose ONE, or choose AS MANY AS YOU WANT. Whet we need is something in between. Say, there are two open seats on a board, and five people are nominated. Members have the right to vote for “up to two” of those five.they can abstain and just not vote, or they can vote for one candidate, or they can vote for two candidates. But if they try to vote for more than two, the system won’t allow the vote. I hope that explanation is sufficient.

Sorry for the typos above. I’m on my iPhone.

Hi @Goodwiller ,

What about if you used the survey option or the quiz option? Have you tested that out? Btw, we are testing it right now. I am also talking to the Zoom team about this in Zoom chat.

Hello @Goodwiller

I get what you are saying now. You cannot lock the attendee to choose only 1 (one) choice. We are testing it right now and I just saw that I can choose both options.

Yes, please, Zoom, can you figure out how to do this? I'm trying to use Zoom to poll a Committee reviewing Student applicants for a position. There are seven candidates for two spots, and 14 people voting. Currently, the Rank Order poll option is flawed, because it relies on the voter to limit themselves to the number of times they click in each column.

My column headers: First Choice, Second Choice, Third Choice

and my list of candidates is seven student names . . . .

As a voter I can click "First Choice" all seven times, for all seven candidates, and Zoom doesn't stop me from doing this.

How does this do any ranking at all?

I have to look elsewhere for other software to handle it. . .

But one day, this would be a nice feature, so please don't give up on us 🙂

Hi, @Faculty_Friend

I’m the Product Manager for Zoom Forms.
We currently don’t have plans to support limiting the number of selections in multiple-choice questions. That said, I’ve captured this request and added it to our feature backlog.
We’ll continue gathering user feedback to help prioritize it and determine a potential release timeline.

Thanks again for sharing this with us!

Hello @Goodwiller ,

Of course. I apologize for how long this took to get on the Zoom roadmap and for your patience and understanding. I will set a taste to check back in to this thread weekly to mark the progress on the Zoom side.
