I may be suggesting into the void here, and it's probably too late for this to be worthwhile, but I'm going to post it for the Zoom developers anyway.
Mid-pandemic, my wife and attended a charity comedy show. The presenters & performers all had video on, but the rest of us were turned off. That made it rough for the comedians, as they couldn't tell whether their jokes were landing.
So what about making a visual representation instead. Everyone's mic'd, and representing volume is pretty easy to do. So make a simple grid, and light up each square relative to how much noise the viewer is making. I've got a simple image representation attached.
So even if they can't *hear* the audience, they at least get feedback.
