Zoom and Windows 11

John-at-USQ

With the latest version installed, I am told that my machine does not support virtual backgrounds. The help page does not list W11 among supported operating systems! Will that be corrected on the W11 release date?

I see that I am in good company! It is interesting that Microsoft Teams has no difficulty with using backgrounds on this machine but Zoom has still not learned how to do it!

Maybe I should move over to Teams for my courses.

The changes made by the ISP seem to have worked. No more dropouts deep enough to cause trouble.

So now I have my backgrounds and can Zoom happily.

But that button to post it is still labelled 'Reply', not 'Post'.

Hi @John-at-USQ

Was this an upgrade - did the same machine previously have Windows 10 and work with Virtual Backgrounds?

Otherwise, does the computer itself meet the minimum system requirements for Virtual Backgrounds?

New latest machine

  • Zoom desktop client, version 5.2.0 or higher
  • Windows 7, 8, and 10 (64-bit)
  • Supported processors
    • Intel i3
      • 2 cores or higher
      • 5th generation or higher
    • Intel i5
      • 2 cores or higher
      • 3rd generation or higher

But no mention of W11.

I think your software needs updating again! My version is 5.8

The same thing has happened to me. I am expecting this to be updated/fixed as soon as possible.

Did you ever figure this out?

With tongue in cheek I pointed out that Teams has no trouble at all in using backgrounds on my Windows 11 machine. I suggested that the solution was to use Teams instead of Zoom, in the hope that the Zoom writers would spring into some sort of action.
The forum lads have revised the log-in process, but there is still no hope on backgrounds!

They have still not changed the tab below to 'submit' or 'post'.

Cheers

It is now December.  I just updated windows to Windows 11, from Windows 10 - in Windows 10 Background ran perfectly.  All of a sudden, today, after the update - ZOOM is telling me that my machine does not support background.  I am a paying zoom customer and now I cannot use background because of Zoom is not on it, and I have a presentation to do on the 21st of December.  Great, Zoom.  Now I think it's time I ask for a refund and move to a different video platform.  This is BS.

That's good information that it was working before. I had not tested that before updating a new machine to W11.

So it might be that the only 'fix' that Zoom needs to make is in the condition for deploying the code that intelligently separates the presenter from the background.

Clicking 'I have a green screen' clearly disables that code, leaving a mixed clutter of background image and room features.

So Zoom could cease to disable that feature just because a mix of hardware and OS does not match a particular recipe, instead just displaying a message that it is at the user's own risk.

Keep grinding away! Eventually the message will get through.

Do you know I how can down load Zoom to the new Windows 10 edge based search engine, the search engine will not let me down load zoom period, and I do not know how to find a workaround

It may be a browser shield.  See if you can bypass it.  Or try a different browser.

I have a Windows 11 ARM Virtual Machine provisioned with 16 GB of RAM and 8 processor cores, sitting on an M1 MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately, Zoom in the VM requires me to use a green screen to have a properly functioning background.

Teams can handle it, so can just about every other video conferencing app.

Does anyone know why is zoom unable to provide the background functionality without a green screen and operate properly inside a Windows 11 ARM Virtual Guest OS on Mac M1?

Does anyone know when will this be fixed?

You should have no problems with static backgrounds.  Are you trying to use a video background?

No, just a standard image. It force selects the green screen option and as a result the person in front of the image (me) does not appear properly because I don't have a green screen.

Screen Shot 2022-08-22 at 11.19.41 AM.png

There is an option to manually select a different background color if a green screen is not present but its grayed out and doesn't actually let me change anything, its either green screen on and the background and person in front doesn't display properly due to the absence of a green screen or it is off and the real world shows in the background.

It force selects the green screen because of the portion circled in red below.

Zoom needs to increase its support for Windows Virtual Guest OS's running on Apple M1 Processors. So many people are using MacBook Pro with M1/M2 Processor and Windows VMGuestOS's running on Parallels or VMWare.

This works great if I am using Microsoft Teams or other video conferencing software, Zoom is the OddApp out.

Facing the same issue with Windows 11 ARM Virtual Machine on an M1 MacBook Pro. So frustrating that I cannot use this awesome machine simply because Zoom says:

  • Virtual background without a green screen is not supported when utilizing the desktop client within a virtual environment.

Simply allowing this to happen would be a game-changer for those of us needing to use Windows (and Zoom on Windows) on their M1 Macs.

Please, Zoom, make this happen!

A while ago I found that an update had fixed the problem.  Now I'm happily framed against my background while leaning back in my recliner with my laptop on my knee.

Keep your fingers crossed!  They might listen to you!

Cheers

John

PS Maybe they are a little hard of hearing.  They still have not replaced the 'reply' button below with 'post', so actions are still ambiguous.

Wait, so you now have virtual background on Zoom on your M1 Mac on Parallel Desktop? What update is that, please???

I am having the same issue except it shows my face and large objects like dressers. I have the newest version 5.13 and my computer (desktop) meets all requirements. Is there a solution?

Are you running the 64-bit version of Zoom?

https://zoom.us/client/5.8.0.1324/ZoomInstaller.exe?archType=x64

The official Windows 11 release date is October 5, 2021 - so you may not see any specific documentation until then.

First I must point out a major fault in this forum. When I opened the notification there was no prompt to sign in, so I thought that that was automatic. I wrote a long, and I hope helpful reply, and submitted it. I was taken to the login page, logged in, and that reply was lost.

Not happy!

The installation was prompted by launching a session. The filename seemed cryptic, so I hoped that your linked installer would solve the problem. It did not.

Members of the 'Windows Insider' scheme have been able to install W11 before the release date. This is a cunning way to iron out any final bugs, using the help of those curious to see what comes next. Unless you have your new version that recognises W11 ready before that due date, there will be a clamour from those who have upgraded. Maybe you would like to post a link to it here for the community to test.

Cheers

John

Hi @John-at-USQ

Can you confirm that you computer meets the actual hardware requirements for Virtual Backgrounds.

Under "Virtual Background requirements for Zoom desktop client"

https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360043484511-System-requirements-for-Virtual-Background

Can you confirm that Zoom is otherwise working on your computer, other than Virtual Backgrounds?

Was your computer upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10 - or was this a fresh install?

I know at least one person running Zoom on Windows 11 - but I know they would not have been using Virtual Backgrounds.

Intel(R) Pentium(R) Gold 7505 @ 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz

8.00 GB (7.56 GB usable)

64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Windows 11 Home

21H2

version 22000.194

Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.194.0

The OS was updated from W10 within a couple of days of purchasing. I have not yet noticed any other problems, having used Zoom for several meetings in the last couple of days.

Cheers

John

Hi, Did you get the virtual background working on your computer?

I Wanted to know if it worked with the Pentium Gold 7505 as I'm looking to buy a laptop with this processor?

Or was Windows 11 the issue?

My Laptop is a brand new one with the W11 update. I was previously using W10 in my other computer, but that one broke, so I bought this one that works PERFECT! Is just zoom, the one giving me the background issue. Other than that, works fine. Please, help us on this! I need to use the background for work.

Thank you Rupert.  I too could not use the virtual backgrounds but I installed Zoom again using the link you provided for the 64 bit and now I am in Zoom virtual background la la land!  Thank you so much for providing the link.

It's December now and yet not running!

John-at-USQ
Attendee

Unfortunately that link did not work for me! I even tried uninstalling Zoom first.

I am still convinced that somewhere in the code is a table of acceptable operating systems - and W11 is not among them!

Since this machine was able to jump Microsoft's high hurdle to install W11, I am sure that it is not deficient.

Cheers

John

And there's more!

After installing the linked version and finding that backgrounds were still unsupported, I checked for updates. That version was 5.8.0 and I was offered 5.8.1. I hoped that Mepemep's success was because Zoom had slipped in a sly fix, but I was disappointed.

Still hoping,

John

I downloaded from the link provided and I was able to participate in my meeting successfully with a selected virtual background.  As I was closing down the app I checked to see what version I was on and I noticed that there was an update available.  I updated to 5.8.1 and started a new meeting and I was still able to use a virtual background.

You are luckier than I am! Are you sure that you are running Windows 11?

Version 21H2, build  22000.258.

Cheers

John

Could this be the problem?

Found in the installer.

Yes, I am running Windows 11.  I also am a Tech professional so I know my stuff.  Zoom is working perfectly for me.  Sorry that you don't have the same experience.

Help me! What did you do to get a virtual background to work on Windows 11?  I was in touch with Zoom just today and they said Windows 11 does not support a virtual background and I should "work around" on another machine. Not an option and Zoom is no help! Sorry Zoom but this is ridiculous! Especially for paying customers! So I am supposed to downgrade my system for a virtual background? Doesn't make sense!

I thought that it was just the issue of W11 being left off the list of operating systems, but others have said that they have got backgrounds to work. I can only conclude that the restriction applies to machines with shared display memory, everything else checks out.

However features like eyebrow tracking work, which I would think called for more vision processing ingenuity, so maybe Zoom will get around to the background problem one day.

Are you having problems with static (image) backgrounds or with video backgrounds?  I found that I can use static ones but not video.  I am using Windows 10, but I wonder if the same thing happens with Windows 11, or if Windows 11 is more restrictive as to the hardware you must have for video backgrounds.

I'd be happy with a static image! If I select 'I have a green screen' that can be enabled, but all the background clutter shows through.

In all such cases, such as the 'upgrade to W11' test, there should be a 'I accept that my system might cause problems' button should force a pass to the test.

Yep, that is what I am running.

I think that the only fly in the ointment is that the display is using shared memory.

Perhaps Zoom will catch up with this some day.

Cheers

Could you not get it to work?

Do you know if it's zoom not accepting the Processor?

Still not working. I do not think that it's the processor.

As I said, shared memory for the display might be the problem.

I live in hope!
