Chat Contents Disappear in Breakout

NEP_Events
Explorer
Explorer

The content that is generated in the chat in the main zoom room disappears (clears out) when participants move into breakout rooms. This is a new change that wasn't happening last week when I used zoom. Is this a bug or new feature that needs to be enabled/disabled?

It used to be the case that "Your chat history follows you. This means while attendees are in a breakout room, they will still be able to view the chat messages from the main room prior to entering a breakout room. When they return to the main room, chat messages from their specific breakout room will appear in the chat panel." As described in this doc: https://management.buffalo.edu/content/dam/mgt/Internal/Faculty-Resources/Documents/Zoom-Breakout-Ro...

Yes this is a huge regression, to lose the ability to see past messages/instructions.

Looks like we can turn off "New meeting chat experience" in settings, as a temporary workaround: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/11402067412109-Enabling-the-new-meeting-chat-experience

Hi There,

I am the author of the documentation you linked to in your post.  That may or may not be the most up to date, I haven't had time to continually look at things with often Zoom updates features and with my main job duties taking up my time.

I just tested this and found the same thing, and it appears we're not the only ones - https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetings/The-Zoom-Chat-is-broken-previous-messages-disappear-after/td-...

Best to submit a support ticket at https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/requests/new

Thanks

KJH

Hi,

I already submitted a support ticket.

Thanks

I encourage others to submit a support ticket as well. Zoom gauges the importance  of requests by many factors, including volume of tickets regarding an issue.

Great find!

This workaround was successful for me! Thank you

Tier-2 Zoom support just told me: "You are correct that the feature "New Meeting Chat Experience" when enabled will clear chat messages when you go back to the main meeting from a breakout room. Our Engineering team has confirmed that it is the expected behavior. "

Looks like they need to hear loudly, in support tickets, from lots more people in order to recognize the impact that clearing the chat in every transition has on their customers.

We should be able to have the chat history persist and the new formatting options. Please submit a ticket if you haven’t already done so.

Keep pushing for this.  I received a reply to the support ticket I opened that there is an open feature request to view chat history while using the new meeting chat features.

Zoom has now responded to other relevant threads https://community.zoom.com/t5/Meetings/The-Zoom-Chat-is-broken-previous-messages-disappear-after/td-... that they are working on a fix

From the release notes - looks like this is getting fixed -

  • Retain chat messages from breakout rooms
When using the new meeting chat experience, users will be able to view the main meeting chat message history when they join a breakout room and also view breakout room chat history when they return to the main meeting. Previously, the new meeting chat experience did not support messages following in and out of breakout rooms.

Although the release notes claim the bug has been fixed, it's still not working for me 😞

Make sure your Zoom client is up to date

When updating, should we inform our participants to ensure that their Zoom accounts are up to date as well, or is it sufficient to update only our own Zoom account as the host of the call? I tried to update my Zoom account and it works. The previous messages are still there but for our participants. The previous chat disappears when they join the breakout room.

Hello,

Prerequisites for using the new meeting chat experience

  • Zoom desktop client*
    • Windows: 5.13.0 or higher
    • macOS: 5.13.0 or higher
    • Linux: 5.13.0 or higher

  • Zoom mobile app*
    • Android: 5.13.0 or higher
    • iOS: 5.13.0 or higher

https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/11402068443021-Using-the-new-meeting-chat-experience

My group is experiencing the lost chat issues, and we have verified that we all have Zoom Windows 5.13.11 installed.

Can you suggest other potential fixes we can look for?

One of the solutions recommended by Zoom to prevent chat history from disappearing when joining a breakout room is to download the latest version, 5.14.10.

If your Zoom account hasn’t been updated yet, you can download it here. https://zoom.us/download.

And finally, it works 🙂
