Suggestion for Cognitive Accessibility and Trigger Warnings / Content Warnings

Dear Zoom Community,

I'm a digital accessibility expert at Deque and I deeply appreciate all of the wonderful accessibility features inside Zoom.   From screen reader accessibility to captions to the the focus feature...I think Zoom is a leader.

I have an idea for a new feature...related to cognitive accessibility and trigger / content warnings.  Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way for participants to indicate to the host...that a topic of dicussion in the meeting needs a content warning (or trigger warning).

Just like a participant can indicate a need for captions....imagine if you could easily put down an "X" card to say that this line of discussion to cease.  This concept comes from Role Playing Games like Dungeon's and Dragons.  You can read about it here:  https://screenrant.com/tabletop-rpg-safety-tools-important-dungeons-dragons-rules/

I think this could be an empowering feature to add.

You can see some context around why I'm asking for this...when we ran axe-con in March of 2021...we had a few sessions that really needed Content Warnings.  We wrote about it here: https://www.deque.com/blog/accessible-speaking-best-practices/

See the section with this text:

  • Avoid presenting content that contains violence, gore, harassment, sex, nudity, drugs, alcohol, or gambling – Words or images that contain violence, gore, self-harm, suicide, harassment, sexual assault, sex, nudity, drugs, alcohol, or gambling may be triggering for some people. If you choose to include this content:
    • Be sure to verbally call out regular content warnings during your presentation so attendees can choose to leave or be prepared to see/hear disturbing content.
    • Let the conference organizers know so they can add a written content warning to your session on the schedule.

Thanks for listening,

Glenda (the goodwitch)
