Speaker volume conrols on computer no longer work when using Zoom 5.14.11 (17466)

When in a Zoom meeting, I used to be able to adjust desktop speaker volume of my using my computer's volume controls.

Now, they do not work on Zoom volume -- instead, I have to go into Zoom Settings/Audio and move the slider.

Is this a setting issue? Or did Zoom change this?

Hi @Zman23, thank you for posting for the first time, and welcome to the Zoom Community!

It's possible that there is a Zoom application setting that is overriding the system audio controls. To check this, go to the Zoom Settings and navigate to the "Audio" section. Ensure that the "Automatically adjust volume" option is enabled. This setting allows Zoom to adjust the volume based on your computer's volume controls.

Let me know if that does it!

HI,

I'm also having this problem, and I can no longer find the checkbox to "Automatically adjust volume".  Instead, the checkbox under the Speaker Volume slider now say "Use separate audio device..."

This is Zoom client for Windows 11 version 5.17.11.

Thanks,

Nir.

The "Automatically adjust volume" option does not even exist!

Same. Still waiting for a reply, @CarlaA

Hi - Welcome to Zoom Community - You can try these steps if as well if you are using windows.

On Windows devices, you can use the volume mixer to adjust the volume of individual apps, however, there is no way to do this on macOS or Linux devices without downloading 3rd-party software.

  1. On your Windows computer, in the lower-right corner of the taskbar, right-click the speaker icon.
  2. Click Open volume mixer.
  3. Under Apps, locate Zoom Meetings.
Note: Multiple Zoom options may be available. Try each one to determine which is the correct option for adjusting only the volume of the Zoom meeting.
  4. Adjust the volume slider as needed.
The volume in a Zoom meeting will increase or decrease based on your selection, while your computer’s volume will remain the same.

Hi Jett,

I've been having the issue described by the OP.

The steps you set out above do work, though my question is why?

  • Why doesn't changing the computer's main volume affect audio from Zoom? (like anyone would expect it would?
  • Why doesn't the volume control within the Zoom settings work? (ie, on a call right now, and the volume slider does nothing.

Please can both of these issues be fixed asap, no one should have to open a fairly hidden Windows setting (volume mixer) to change the volume of audio in an app, the main volume control should do this (always, for all applications).

Thanks

Matt

This problem suddenly started happening to me during meetings in January 2025, and it's absurd that this issue is still a problem. The option to automatically adjust volume according to computer settings has disappeared for me, too. Finding and adjusting the volume settings in the middle of a meeting presentation is a horrible, especially when I'm in the middle of sharing my screen. I now have to open the settings window and keep it up throguhout my meeting to manually adjust the sound. The window is huge and takes up half my screen and is always on the top of other windows, obscuring windows that I need to see during my meeting. I'm using the most updated version of Zoom. This is unacceptable - how has zoom not updated this problem yet?

I have the same issue in March, 2025. System audio controls (volume up/down and mute) do not affect Zoom audio volume. This is ridiculous. Zoom, please fix this.

I am having the same problem.  I don't have the option to change the speaker as the other individual listed above.  Is there a solution?

Kindly update your app to the latest version and let us know if the issue persists.

Thanks for the followpup. I still have the problem.

FYI, I always keep my applications up-to-date.

Just to be crystal clear:

Dell Laptop XPS 15 7590

Operating System: Windows 10 64 bit when reported. Now Windows 11 Home 64

Zoom version 6.4.6 (64360)

You can tell by the large number of other people with the same issue, this is a long-standing, pervasive problem that for some reason, you (Zoom) have conciously decided not to fix.

It's October and this Issue is STILL happening. Any found a fix? It worked fine until last week now changing my computer audio doesn't change the output volume.

Found Reseting the driver used for my Bluetooth Device and and adjusting the volume level in the old school control panel corrected the issue of being able to control Zoom meeting volume using the master volume control

Windows 11 Pro 25H2 Build 26200.6901 - Zoom 6.6.5 - Having to Go into the Volume Mixer to adjust zoom meeting volume is not an acceptible work around. We should be able to use the master volume control As we have been able to for years before.
