start mac zoom desktop, cannot join meeting, when I exit zoom I get a leave meeting message

Subject says it mostly: I start zoom, I command-J to join a meeting and get a beep. No meeting shows in the drop-down of open Windows. I exit zoom and get a "leave meeting ?" query. No error codes.Device type: Macbook - apple silicon - Sequoia 15.4.1...
