Question

Writing on Whiteboard Disappears on iPad but not on Mac

A new problem has come up just in the last couple of days that I have had no problems with previously. While using Zoom to tutor, I use both my MacBook and iPad. The iPad is for writing on the Zoom whiteboard. For some reason, when I write on the whiteboard on my iPad, I can see what I am writing until I lift my Apple Pencil at which point what I wrote disappears on my iPad but is visible on my MacBook and for everyone else in the meeting (including my student). As you can imagine, it is quite difficult to write on the whiteboard with my iPad when I cannot see what I have already written. Has anyone experienced this? How can I fix this?

I have tried deleting and reinstalling the Zoom app on my iPad, following and unfollowing the creator of the whiteboard, and creating the whiteboard on both my MacBook and on my iPad. None of these have helped.

Hi @swright28, sorry to hear you're facing these issues. Are you still facing the issue of your strokes disappearing? If so, I'm happy to take a look at your environment over a meeting. Looking forward to hearing back.

    Thanks,

    Whiteboard Product Team

I am having exactly this problem. Didn't used to do this. What is the fix? I've restarted both. I've checked every setting. I've tried everything that was recommended on the web.

That was exactly my same scenario. Unfortunately, the only fix for me was buying a new iPad. What iPad do you have currently?

It's about 5 years old, don't have it at hand, but I'm now pretty sure you've give me the answer.

I have a similar issue that just started, probably with the update to 7.1.5 for iOS.  I likewise host a call with a Mac, join with an iPad and annotate with an Apple Pencil.  When I share my screen or the Whiteboard Classic, or another attendee shares their screen, my pencil annotations all appear on my iPad as they’re written, but after a few seconds about half of them disappear.  Those that disappear never appear on the host screen (or that of other attendees).  BUT if the “Show names of annotators” setting is on, that label does appear for each pencil stroke.  Below is an image showing the end result.  Sometimes I have to redo a stroke as many as 5 times to get it to stay.

Bizarrely, this isn’t the case for any other annotation tool: highlighter, disappearing pencil, smart pencil, line, rectangle, circle…  So the workaround is just to write with a highlighter.  The issue also doesn’t appear on the new (non-Classic) Whiteboard.

I recently had another attendee join with her iPad to annotate and she had the same problem: a random 50% of her pencil strokes didn’t show up.  So it’s not just my iPad.  @mpaterno  Any word on the engineers replicating or tackling this problem?

@mpaterno I am having exactly the same issues for the last 2 weeks. I can’t teach/tutor if this doesn’t work. Paying for this zoom account and need it to work dependably. What is the solution, please?

While waiting for Zoom to resolve this issue (hopefully soon),
I have found a way to get around the problem, by uninstalling Zoom workspace and installing Zoom Rooms. It doesnt have the disappearing annotations and works as before

Thank you so much! I’ve been using the highlighter and that works for now. They said they’ll release a fix in September as well. Hopefully many will benefit!
