To get a transcript without recording, you need to use automated captions (live transcription) during the meeting. In Zoom, the transcript is accessed from the captions/CC controls while the meeting is running (it’s a “view/save captions” type workflow, not a post-meeting transcript like cloud recording).

If you turned on captions but never saw any transcript options, the most common causes are:

• Automated captions aren’t enabled at the account/group/host level, so you can turn on “captions” but you won’t get live transcription features.
• You’re not the host (or don’t have permission) to start automated captions / allow participants to save them.
• You’re using a client/platform that doesn’t show the same caption/transcript controls (try the latest Zoom Workplace desktop client).

I used to be able to save transcripts after the meetings end. For some reason, it doesn't give me the option to save transcripts anymore, it has been like that for the last couple weeks.

I was also used to record meeting on my PC and still had the possibility to see a transcript file, for which I asked Zoom to summarize in a short or long format. This went well till the end of June 2026. 

I had another meeting with customers yesterday and wanted to run these steps but alas, there was no transcript visible. 
Is it now mandatory to save the recording “in the cloud” and not locally to be able to get a transcript?

Was this since the May 2026 update? Transcript access got a lot more difficult since then. I use it as an accessibility feature during meetings, and it’s been a low-key nightmare trying to engage like I used to be able to >.< left at the mercy of individual hosts, and even when they want to help, they can’t always get it working. Not always an option. 

This changed with the May 2026 update, which is why the old steps stopped working. Captions are now read-along only: nobody can save or download them after the meeting. The text you can keep is a separate feature called Meeting transcript, and it’s off until the host or an admin turns it on.

For the host: the host's account must be Pro, Business or Enterprise. In the web portal, open Settings, then Meeting, and turn on Meeting transcript under In Meeting (Advanced). If the switch is grayed out, it’s locked at the account or group level and only your Zoom admin can change it. The sub-setting “Allow saving of transcripts to computer by” decides who gets to save.

In the meeting (desktop app): click More, then Transcript. A participant sends a request and the host chooses whether to start it. When you're done, click Save transcript at the bottom of the panel; the .TXT goes to Documents/Zoom. Save before the meeting ends.

A local computer recording doesn't get a Zoom transcript; audio transcripts are made only for cloud recordings.
