Issue with side-by-side gallery

I want to run a webinar where I’m sharing my screen and have my thumbnail to the side of the screenshare for attendees. I’ve followed the instructions to have “side by side gallery” and have attendees following host’s view, but all you can see is the screenshare, not the thumbnail. Any idea how I can resolve this?

I’ve seen this info from support but it doesn’t work:

The “Live” View

In Zoom Meetings, each attendee has control over their own display configuration; the Host can affect that to some extent, but ultimately the Attendee has control. You can advise your attendees to change the settings in the upper right View menu, with the side-by-side option being most often used to make the full presentation unobscured.

In Webinars, the Host has full control over the attendees’ view – though panelists (everyone “on stage,” so to speak) still have control of their own view. As the Host, go to the Panelists window down to the … Menu and either:

  • Set a side-by-side mode to show speaker or gallery”

This is a common confusion with Zoom webinars.

Even if you set side-by-side view, it doesn’t always force attendees to see your thumbnail next to the screen share the way you expect. A couple things to check:

    • Make sure you’re running it as a Webinar (not Meeting) and using “Follow Host’s View” correctly
    • In the Panelists menu, explicitly set Side-by-side: Speaker or Gallery after you start screen sharing
    • Ensure your camera is on and you’re visible as a panelist (not just host)
    • Sometimes the thumbnail is very small or collapses depending on attendee window size

Also worth noting: even in webinars, Zoom can behave inconsistently depending on the client/device attendees are using.

If it still doesn’t show, you might need to test with another account/device  many hosts run into this limitation when trying to guarantee a fixed layout for all attendees.
