Screen sharing black screen on newest Linux deb version on Ubuntu 22.04 XOrg

Hi,
I installed the newest version of the Linux client yesterday and recognized that when sharing the screen I only see a black screen.

Version: 6.2.0 (1855)

I am definitely on XOrg and NOT on wayland.
Downgrading to version 6.1.10 fixed it.

I'm on lightdm and use Qtile as TWM.

I can't check whether this happens on GNOME or Plasma, too.

Many thanks in advance!

You are not going crazy.    I am on Ubuntu 22.04 (but Wayland) running Zoom 6.2.0.1855 and I just went through the most embarrassing screensharing debacle of my career.  I could start screen sharing, but then I was unable to click my own shared desktop.  I could not click anything on the screen, change browser tabs, highlight text, etc.

Eventually, Zoom itself crashed and I had to rejoin the meeting.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to figure out how to revert back to an older version.  I have  6.0.2.4680 .deb sitting in my downloads, but that no longer allows you to sign in.

Where can we download download 6.1.6 (1013) which is what is required to sign into Zoom?

Okay, downgrading worked for me to resolve these issues.  In Ubuntu 22.04 with Wayland, I can now successfully share my screen.

I realize they might be a little different than OP, but hopefully this helps others.

To download older releases, you can swap in version numbers into URLs like these:

https://cdn.zoom.us/prod/6.1.6.1013/zoom_amd64.deb
https://cdn.zoom.us/prod/6.1.10.1400/zoom_amd64.deb

For now, I am using 6.1.6.1013

You can find the list of actual release numbers from this KM article.  https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb&sysparm_article=KB0061222

Just went through the same thing. For me the last known working version is 6.1.11.1545 (b16d6bd8). Anything newer seems to get the black screen. Also wondering if this is a Qtile thing as I am running Qtile as well?

Edit: added bit about qtile

This used to only happen when the "Annotate" tool was activated while I shared my screen. That was due to me not actively using a compositor in Linux.

The past few weeks, it happens every time I share my screen now. If you are using X11 and have xcompmgr available, you can use the following command to activate a compositor:

$ xcompmgr -c -l0 -t0 -r0 -o.00

My guess is that zoom made an update that attempts to work with the compositor always when sharing your screen as opposed to just during annotation.

This workaround didn't work for me. 😕😕

This also occurs on Arch Linux with Xorg and i3.

I can confirm that a) annotating already caused a black screen in the past and b) starting xcompmgr resolves the issue. This is not ideal, but an acceptable workaround. However, you have to know this in the first place to use screen sharing.

Thanks @cjt9 for pointing this out!

Another co worker is having an issue with this with vanilla Pop OS install. So I don't fully think this is related to a specific windows manager.

I encountered the same problem: start of screen sharing makes the shared screen black and not displaying results  of any mouse operation.

Encountered on 6.2.0 (1855) first.

Upgrade to 6.2.6 (2503) did not help.

Downgrade to 6.1.11 (1545) helped.

Hello!

Has this issue been resolved? In what version?

I am currently locked to Version: 6.1.11 (1545) until this gets fixed.

Hello, I have this as well on Zoom 6.2.6 b2503 on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.  I hope they have a fix soon.
