Question

zoom meetings

I’m preparing to lead virtual coaching sessions and would love to hear what has worked for others. What Zoom features or activities help participants feel comfortable speaking, asking questions, and staying engaged?

For virtual coaching, the key is to give participants low-pressure ways to participate before asking them to speak.

Zoom features and activities that work well

    • Polls/Quizzes: Start with a quick poll or knowledge check so everyone participates without having to speak.
    • Chat: Ask simple prompts like “What’s one challenge you’re facing?” Participants can respond privately or publicly depending on your chat settings.
    • Reactions/Raise Hand: Use 👍, 👏, or Raise Hand for quick feedback without interrupting the discussion.
    • Breakout Rooms: Put participants into small groups for practice, role-play, or peer discussion. Smaller groups often make speaking feel less intimidating.
    • Whiteboard Activities: Use icebreakers, quick votes, word clouds, or other interactive activities to get everyone contributing.
    • Q&A: Give participants a structured place to submit questions. Hosts and co-hosts can answer them live or in writing.

    Simple coaching flow

    Check-in → Poll → Teach → Practice in Breakouts → Group Discussion → Q&A → Takeaway

A good rule is to alternate between listening, doing, and discussing every 5–10 minutes rather than relying on presentation time alone.
