Zoom links force "Join from Browser" when logged in, bypassing the desktop app (Even with web settings OFF)

[Summary] I am experiencing a persistent issue where clicking a Zoom meeting link automatically opens the web browser version instead of launching the desktop application. This occurs even when I have disabled the "Join from your browser" link in my web portal settings.

[Environment]

  • OS: macOS (Occurs on two separate MacBooks)

  • Browser: Chrome, Safari

  • Account: Personal account (Free/Basic tier)

[Steps already taken]

  1. Web Portal Settings: Disabled "Show 'Join from your browser' link" in the "In Meeting (Advanced)" section.

  2. Reinstallation: Completely uninstalled and reinstalled the Zoom desktop client.

  3. Browser Cleanup: Cleared browser cache, cookies, and reset protocol handler permissions for app.zoom.us.

  4. Different Devices: Reproduced the same issue on a second computer with the same account.

  5. Incognito Mode: (Crucial) When using Chrome's Incognito mode (not logged in), the "Join from Zoom Workplace app" button appears correctly and launches the app.

[Current Observation] The issue seems tied to my specific Zoom account. When logged in, the browser bypasses the "Join meeting" prompt screen and redirects directly to the browser-based meeting interface (asking for my name/camera access). This happens with various meeting links, including those with custom company branding.

Does anyone know if there is a hidden server-side flag or a specific account setting that might be forcing this behavior? Any help would be appreciated.

I wanted to respond because you have put such great effort into your post, that I want you to know it’s viewable if you receive no other responses (which is common in Zoom).

Besides the frustration of having to log in each time and renew your permissions (e.g., camera, microphone, etc.), do you have any other service issues?  Or is the rest the same after logging into each meeting?  (I might not respond, but it might help someone else if they see your post.)

I prefer to join from the browser, and it has been automatic until recently when I now have to choose to enter from the browser or the app, and like you, I also have to provide renewed permissions each time. This is very frustrating when the clock is ticking on meeting time, and clients are sitting waiting.  It is very inefficient.  So, you are not alone.

Best wishes on a solution. Have you used Tencent Meeting?  I have found it more efficient in the last couple of years, although I previously preferred some of the Zoom features (e.g., whiteboards, and local recording which has now also disappeared), which are apparently  no longer available or at least inaccessible or difficult to find.

Thank you so much for your reply — and sorry for my very late response. I really appreciated you taking the time to respond to my post.

Good news: I was able to resolve the issue. It turned out that an integration with an external tool called Tactiq was likely causing the problem. After disconnecting it from Zoom, everything went back to normal and the desktop app started opening correctly again.

I was also interested to hear that you actually prefer joining from the browser — that was an interesting perspective since I was trying so hard to avoid it 😅

And thank you for mentioning Tencent Meeting as well. I hadn’t looked into it before, but now I’m curious and plan to check it out.

Thanks again for your kindness and for sharing your experience!
