Zoom for Chrome PWA No audio when people are talking

Hi All,

I am not getting any audio come through in a meeting today when people have been talking.

This is not an issue with my actual chromebook speakers because I can hear the audio test tone perfectly fine, I can hear music on spotify, and the audio on youtube videos works absolutely fine.

The only time I am getging any issues is when trying to hear people speak in a Zoom meeting - I can even hear the join and leave bell notification sounds during the meeting, which is even more confusing because these audio cues work on Zoom for Chrome but actually hearing people doesn't work!

INCREDIBLY frustrating! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Try checking your Zoom speaker settings and switching the speaker output, then rejoin the meeting. If other audio works but only voices don't, it could be a Zoom app issue. Updating Zoom or trying the browser version may fix it.

My son uses an HP Chromebook for a recurring Zoom tutoring class. The same meeting link worked normally for a long time, years, but approximately a week or 2 ago participant audio suddenly stopped working.

He can join the meeting, see everyone’s video and view the tutor’s shared screen, but he cannot hear the tutor or any other participants.

The Chromebook itself plays sound normally. YouTube and other videos work, and Zoom’s Test Speaker & Microphone function works correctly. Zoom reports:

“Your device is working properly”

The Zoom test tone is audible through the Chromebook speakers, but live participant speech remains completely silent.

Tests completed:

  • Confirmed Chromebook volume is up
  • Confirmed Zoom is using the internal speaker
  • Joined using Computer Audio
  • Left Computer Audio and rejoined
  • Restarted the Chromebook
  • Checked Chrome and Zoom permissions
  • Removed the Zoom PWA and joined through Chrome instead
  • Cleared/reset Zoom data
  • Tested with the Chromebook’s internal speakers
  • Tested with USB headphones
  • Successfully completed Zoom’s speaker and microphone test
  • Confirmed other audio plays normally on the Chromebook

The problem remains with both the internal speakers and USB headphones.

During the affected meeting, Zoom’s Audio Statistics → Receive showed:

  • Frequency: 32 kHz
  • Latency: 32 ms
  • Jitter: 3 ms
  • Packet loss: 0%

This suggests that an incoming audio connection exists, but no participant speech is being played.

Important isolation tests:

  • The same Chromebook successfully joined a different Zoom meeting hosted by my wife, and live audio worked normally.
  • The same tutoring meeting worked correctly when my son joined from a Windows laptop.
  • Other children in the tutoring class appear to hear the tutor normally, although I do not know whether any of them use Chromebooks.
