Zoom crashes when i try to add a background image

I cannot add/change my virtual background because Zoom crashes when the open file dialog box appears. The cursor will spin for a minute, then zoom will crash. Any troubleshooting ideas would be welcome. I have already uninstalled using the clean uninstaller tool, and then reinstalled. The problem persists and occurs on Zoom only. The dialog appears, the cursor changes to the "waiting cursor",  you cannot interact with the screen, then it crashes. It's not intermittent - it's every single time. I was able to add a background on my phone but it didnt transfer over to my pc.

    Hello @maybeimcris,

Welcome to the Zoom Community! We’re glad to have you here!

Thanks for the detailed description. Here are some advanced troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause Zoom to crash when handling virtual backgrounds. Make sure your graphics drivers are fully up to date.

    2. Check Windows Updates: Ensure your operating system is fully updated, as missing updates can affect application stability.

    3. Run Zoom as Administrator: Right-click the Zoom shortcut and select "Run as administrator" to see if this changes the behavior.

    4. Test with a Different Windows User Profile: Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause persistent issues. Try creating a new Windows user account and see if the problem persists there.

    5. Disable Hardware Acceleration: In Zoom, go to Settings > Video > Advanced and try toggling hardware acceleration options off.

    6. Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts: Security software or other utilities (like file dialog enhancers or clipboard managers) can sometimes interfere with file dialogs. Try temporarily disabling such software.

    7. Try a Different File Location: Place your background image in a simple directory (like C:\Users\YourName\Pictures) and try adding it from there.

Unfortunately, virtual backgrounds added on your phone do not sync to your PC, as Zoom stores them locally on each device.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may want to check for any error logs generated by Zoom or consider reaching out to Zoom technical support for more in-depth troubleshooting.

This is happening to me also. Latest graphics driver, latest updates, running app as administrator. I can add a background on my mac, but not my Windows PC. I click the + button, then select “Add Image,” and the file explorer window tries to appear, then displays “(Not Responding)” and goes blurry, then Zoom crashes. The lock up and crash happens almost immediately after the window appears, before selecting a file or even navigating the explorer interface.
