Zoom camera taking 5-8 seconds to turn on - switching to Media Foundation fixed it for me
Just wanted to share this in case anyone else runs into the same issue, because this was driving me kinda crazy lol.
Recently my camera in Zoom started taking forever to turn on. Every time I clicked Start Video, it would stay gray for like 5-8 seconds before the video actually showed up. Sometimes I would even get a "Connection Failed" error and the camera wouldnt start at all.
The weird part was my camera itself seemed totally fine. If I opened the Windows Camera app, the built-in camera opened right away. I also tried an external USB webcam in Zoom and had the SAME delay, so it didnt really seem like a bad webcam.
My laptop specs btw:
- Intel Core Ultra 9 185H
- 32GB RAM
- Intel Arc Graphics
- Windows 64-bit
I updated Zoom, Windows/firmware, restarted the computer, closed OBS and anything else that might use the camera, turned off video effects, etc. Nothing really fixed it.
I also timed it a few times. At one point Start Video was taking:
8.49s / 8.20s / 8.55s / 7.82s / 7.48s
So it wasnt just randomly lagging, it was pretty consistent.
Then I tested the camera preview under Zoom Settings → Video & effects. Even without being in a meeting, the preview still took around 5-6 seconds to load. That made me think it wasnt really a network issue.
Finally I tried changing:
Settings → Video & effects → Advanced → Video Capturing Method
DirectShow:
4.78s / 4.32s / 4.57s
Media Foundation:
basically instant, less than 1 second
Huge difference.
I rebooted the whole computer after that just to make sure the camera wasnt already "warmed up" from all my testing lol. Opened Zoom fresh after reboot, went straight to Video settings, and yep... still opened in less than a second.
So for me the fix was simply:
Video Capturing Method → Media Foundation
I'm leaving it on Media Foundation now and so far everything seems normal.
Not 100% sure yet if this also fixed the occasional "Connection Failed" error since that one was random to begin with, but at least the 5-8 sec camera startup delay is gone.
Hopefully this helps somebody else before they spend hours reinstalling drivers/Zoom or thinking their webcam is dying 😅
(I used ai to help me drafted this)
