Why is there no "Generate with AI" button in Virtual Backgrounds tab

Hi All,

I’m on a free standard plan. Under the Zoom Workspace app->Settings->Video & effects->Virtual Bakcgrounds, the documentation says I should see a “Generate with AI button” but I don’t get one there. Any idea how to enable it? I do have virtual backgrounds enabled in the web portal settings and am able to use both video and image based virtual backgrounds now.

The virtual help agent says this about it:

I can’t help with why the “Generate with AI” button is missing, because that troubleshooting detail isn’t covered in the Zoom public knowledge base content I have available.

Hi, the “Generate with AI” virtual background feature is currently limited to certain account types, app versions, and device requirements. On free Basic/Standard plans, the option may not appear even if regular virtual backgrounds are enabled.

A few things to check:

  • Make sure you’re running the latest version of the Zoom Workspace desktop app.

  • The feature is only available on the desktop client, not the web app/mobile app.

  • Some AI features require compatible hardware and may only be rolled out to specific regions/accounts.

  • In some cases, the account owner/admin must enable Zoom AI Companion features in the Zoom web portal.

If all of that is already set correctly and the button still doesn’t appear, it’s likely that the feature hasn’t been enabled for free accounts or your specific account yet.

    Yes just updated.

    I assume you mean the Zoom Workspace desktop app from your first point, so yes.

    This doesn’t make sense with regard to desktop hardware and the specific issue of generating a virtual background. What do we mean in particular? Intel CPU’s not supported? Computer without specific GPUs? Where does one find the hardware compatibility list for the Generate virtual background with AI feature? I’m not finding it via Google Search.

    I’m in Los Angeles. How do I determine what “region” I’m in?

    Also, How, or where would I look up, to  determine if my “region” is supported with the Generate virtual background with AI?

    I’m specifying the Generate virtual backgrounds with AI. Is there a list of which account types this feature is available to? Why should we have to guess?

    Again, I’m on a standard/personal plan. Are we saying that generating a virtual background with AI is under the heading/settings for Aoom AI Companion? If not, where is the enablement toggle for my specific request?
