Recently video quality is capped to 640x360

Very odd. I cannot send above 360p anymore. I have all settings to HD and even checked 1080p in Advanced settings. Fullscreen, Ethernet, fast CPU, good uplink speed… Has anything at Zoom’s end changed?

    Hi @ErikTheSwede -

Here’s a detailed overview of known issues, recent changes, and troubleshooting steps related to Zoom video quality being limited to 360p or below, even when HD settings are enabled.

    1. Known Causes of 360p Limitation

    • Account-Level HD Restrictions:
Zoom sometimes disables HD (720p/1080p) by default for certain account types. Even if you enable HD in your client settings, the account admin must also enable it in the Zoom web portal → Account Management → Account Settings → Meeting → In Meeting (Advanced).

    • Bandwidth or CPU Optimization:
Zoom dynamically adjusts resolution based on network and CPU load. If Zoom detects congestion or high CPU usage, it may automatically downgrade to 360p to maintain stability.

    • Meeting Type or Participant Count:
HD video is often limited to smaller meetings. Large meetings or webinars may cap resolution to 360p or 720p to conserve bandwidth.

    • Camera Driver or Virtual Backgrounds:
Outdated camera drivers or use of virtual backgrounds (especially without a green screen) can reduce resolution output.

    • Zoom Client Version:
Some recent updates have changed how HD permissions are handled. If you’re using an older client, it may not request HD streams properly.

    2. Steps to Troubleshoot

    1. Verify HD Settings in Both Client and Web Portal

      • In the Zoom desktop app:
Settings → Video → Enable HD
      • In the web portal (admin):
Settings → Meeting → In Meeting (Advanced) → Group HD video → Enable (720p or 1080p)
    2. Check Account Type

      • 1080p is typically available only for Business, Education, or Enterprise accounts and may require contacting Zoom Support to enable it.
    3. Test in a Controlled Meeting

      • Start a new meeting with one participant and check the resolution via Statistics → Video tab.
      • If it shows 360p, the limitation is likely account-level or bandwidth-related.
    4. Update Zoom Client

      • Ensure you’re running the latest version. Zoom periodically modifies HD behavior in updates.
    5. Disable Virtual Backgrounds and Filters

      • These can reduce performance and trigger automatic resolution downgrades.
    6. Check Network and Hardware

      • Even with Ethernet, ensure upload speed exceeds 3 Mbps and CPU usage is below 80%.

    3. Recent Changes (as of 2025–2026)

    • Group HD Policy Enforcement:
Zoom has tightened enforcement of HD permissions. Even if users enable HD locally, the account must explicitly allow it.

    • Dynamic Resolution Scaling:
Zoom now prioritizes frame rate and stability over resolution when network conditions fluctuate.

    • 1080p Availability:
1080p streaming remains limited to specific use cases (e.g., webinars, spotlighted speakers, or Zoom Rooms).

    4. Recommended Next Steps

    • Confirm with your Zoom admin that Group HD is enabled at the account level.
    • Test with a different account or device to isolate whether the issue is account-based.
    • If HD remains unavailable, contact Zoom Support to verify if your account is eligible for 720p/1080p streaming.

    Hope this helps!
