Missing recording-Need help

Hi,

I joined a Zoom meeting as a guest (not signed in). The host was having trouble recording, so I selected "Record" on my side. I heard the Zoom audio message confirming that the recording had started.

When the meeting ended, I lef the meeting, and I never saw any message about it processing or saving. But I did see a message to sign in to see your recording. No file shows up on my device and nothing appears in my Zoom account.

Is it possible to recover this recording in this situation — when the participant was a guest and the recording may not have finished processing?

Any guidance would be appreciated, I cannot get any live person from Zoom to help me.

Hello @SharonW22!

We're glad to have you here.

I’m sorry for the late response; if you clicked “Record as a guest” (without signing in), the recording was only saved locally on the computer used during the meeting. It won’t appear in your Zoom account, and Zoom can’t recover it from their servers.

You can still try checking the same computer used in the meeting:

• In the Zoom app: Profile picture → Settings → Recording → check the recording location

• Default folders:

Windows: C:\Users\Username\Documents\Zoom

Mac: /Users/Username/Documents/Zoom

Linux: /home/Username/Documents/Zoom

You can also search for:

• Zoom recording folders (usually named by meeting date/time)

Files ending in .mp4 or .m4a

If the recording didn’t finish saving or converting (for example, Zoom closed unexpectedly, the computer shut down, or storage/permissions failed), there may unfortunately be no recoverable copy.

If you joined as a guest and were not signed in to a Zoom account when you started the recording, recovery may be difficult.

A few possibilities to check:

  • Ask the meeting host whether the recording was actually saved as a cloud recording on their account. In some cases, participants can be granted recording privileges, but the recording is still associated with the host's account.

  • If it was a local recording, Zoom normally displays a conversion/processing window after the meeting ends. Since you didn't see that, the recording may not have been finalized.

  • Check your device for Zoom recording folders, although guest users typically need to be signed in and have recording permissions for local recordings to be saved reliably.

  • If you later signed in with the same Zoom account that was used during the meeting, check both the Local Recordings and Cloud Recordings sections.

Unfortunately, if the recording session never completed processing or was tied to an anonymous guest session, there may be no recoverable file. Your best chance is to verify with the host whether a recording was created on their account or whether they can see any recording activity in the meeting reports.

I hope you're able to locate it.
