Intermittent Black video screen when starting meeting using Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme ISO as video webcam source

Our lead AV engineer films and live streams all campus-wide president / board / team meetings via Zoom.  His camera source is a video switcher called Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme ISO (USB-A or C).   He is experiencing intermittent blank black video screen when starting meetings which is a problem since he is the initial moderator / meeting host.  Ending all Zoom processes via task manager and starting zoom workplace fresh seems to help, but it is not a 100% workaround.

Anyone else experience this when using a camera source other than integrated webcam on their laptop?

Application:  Zoom Workplace

Version:  6.7.2 (26346)

Dell Latitude 5530, 5550 laptops running Win11 latest updates

+++++

Issue cannot be replicated on a Dell 7060 SFF desktop running Win11 latest updates.

Thanks,

Brad

    hi @Brad Sherman ,

    I have 3 atem.
On my main machine I have an atem mini and it allows me to share screens from the other two laptops on my desk for when I am running meetings and productions and demonstrations. I have been using ATEM for virtual camera inputs for 5 years with multiple combinations of hardware.

There is no problem with this.
I suggest you try another and more expensive USB cables as this is a known issues sometimes with the atem.

The only issue I have to remember is to turn off all the affects so I can see the input cleanly (blur etc)

    all the best

    Hi John,

Appreciate the prompt reply and tips provided.   He also has the ATEM mini and it never displays this issue.  We have tried multiple brands / grades of USB cables that he had on hand.  I’ve invited him in here directly, but I will pass along this to try.

    Thanks,

    Brad

    hi @Brad Sherman ,

The only other tip I remember is changing the HDMI input on the device.
It may be the blank is a retry for the devices handshaking the resolution. A device may change its resolution based on what the Atem sends back to it when you plug it in.

The first connection has more logic to deal with input screen size and refresh.
So, I would try plugging the HDMI input in different ports.

Please like my reply if it helps you.

This behavior has been reported with USB video capture devices on certain Dell laptops, especially when Zoom initializes before the ATEM is fully recognized by Windows. USB power management and selective suspend settings can sometimes cause a black screen on first launch.
