My company has started using Immersive View for our Townhalls. I can’t figure out how to create an immersive view background that functions like the backgrounds already available in zoom. Can anyone help me with this?

Hello, @Tracy Smith! Welcome, and thanks for joining the Zoom community! Yes, you can create and use your own Immersive View background.

    Here's how:

    • Click View in the top-right corner of your Zoom meeting.
    • Select Change Immersive View.
    • Click the + icon to upload your own background image.
    • Choose your image and click Open.
    • Click Start to launch the scene.
    • Drag and place each participant where you want them in the background, then resize their video tiles as needed.

One thing to keep in mind is that custom Immersive View scenes don't include predefined seating or placement like Zoom's built-in scenes. You'll need to position participants manually each time. For the best results, use an image that meets the same resolution and file format recommendations as Zoom virtual backgrounds.

    Hope this helps!

Hello and thank you so much for the reply! It’s good to know that I have to position folks each time. I’ve tried to create a background a few times and I am running into an issue with how far to the sides I can place people. It’s like it will only let me place folks in the inner 2/3 of the background. With the zoom pre-made backgrounds I have no limits on where I can place people. Do you know how I can fix this or if there is a fix?

    Hi, @Tracy Smith

Thanks for the additional details! A few things to check that can affect the usable "stage" area with custom Immersive View images:

    • Match the image to Zoom's expected background specs here. Export your scene using a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. If the image is extra-wide, has letterboxing, or uses an unusual aspect ratio, Zoom may scale or crop it internally, making the usable placement area appear limited to the center.
    • Remove transparent padding or borders. Empty margins in a PNG/JPG can reduce the area where participants appear to fit.
    • Test with a 1920 × 1080 JPG. If edge placement works with a standard image, the issue is likely related to your custom scene's dimensions or aspect ratio.
    • Make sure Zoom is updated. Client versions can affect Immersive View behavior, so ensure the host is using the latest Zoom desktop app.

Hopefully, these checks help identify what may be limiting the placement area.

Ahha! Thank you :) One more question, now that I have it built out when I use it everything, including me, is a little blurry. When I switch back to a pre-built zoom background it is crisp. Is there a fix for this?

Thank you again for all of your help here, very much appreciated!!

Thanks for the follow-up, @Tracy Smith! Glad to hear you have the scene built out. It may be worth taking a look at the source file and export process. If the image was compressed or resized multiple times, that can affect the overall quality. If you created it in PowerPoint, Canva, Photoshop, or another design tool, try exporting directly from the original file as a PNG or high-quality JPG. Text, logos, and other graphics can make quality issues more noticeable, so testing with a simple background may help confirm whether the file itself is causing the blur.

For the best results, custom Immersive View backgrounds should follow the same resolution and file type recommendations as Zoom virtual backgrounds. If the image doesn’t meet those requirements, it may appear less sharp when used in a meeting.

Also, if your own video feed is blurry only when using the custom Immersive View (but looks sharp in a normal Zoom video), check that HD video is enabled in Zoom’s video settings.
