I can't hear audio but audience can on PC and powerpoint

I've been using Zoom for a long time with the same setup and suddenly I'm encountering problems.

1. If I play a sound file on my computer, nobody can hear it. It's as if the sound is completely turned off from the file and not routed to the speakers or the Zoom meeting.

2. I embedded a video in powerpoint. I played the video and made sure that "share audio" in Zoom was checked. That allowed the audience to hear the audio in the video playing in the slide but I could not hear it as the presenter and host.

I'm at a loss to explain how or why this is occurring and hopefully someone has seen and remedied this issue and can share the solution.

Another meeting and same problem. I cannot hear the audio that is playing to others. It is only broadcast to the meeting but not broadcast back to me, the host. I can't seem to explain it.

I too am at a loss, but the audience can[t hear my video either. I have tried each step in the troubleshooting guide. any ideas?

What worked for me to get the audience to hear was click a button that says "share audio" in the dropdown menu while I am in Zoom. I can't remember which top item it is but it is there. But the problem is that I don't hear the audio once I do this. It doesn't matter which machine I use so it's not a PC issue but either an obscure settings issue or something about Zoom has changed. I have used the exact same setup as the past 4 years.
