Hearing Others in Breakout Rooms

Hello,

During our breakout rooms, the audio is leaking from one breakout into another breakout. Each individual is remote and not located in the same physical space. The audio is slightly decreased but is overtaking the breakout rooms discussions. Is anyone else having this issue or heard of something like this?

We had a participant that was also in Microsoft Teams meeting behind Zoom. So the audio was carrying from Teams.

Welcome to the Zoom Community, @Elijah Bainbridge! As per @Megann they had a participant that was also in the Microsoft Teams meeting behind Zoom. So the audio was carrying from Teams. Audio should not leak between breakout rooms in Zoom, as each room is designed to be fully isolated. If participants are remote and not sharing a physical space, this issue is unusual. Here are also a few things to check and try:

  1. Confirm Participants’ Devices: Make sure no one is logged into multiple devices or breakout rooms at the same time, as this could cause unintended audio overlap.
  2. Check for Open Microphones: Ask participants if they have any other Zoom meetings or audio sources open on their computers that could be causing cross-talk.
  3. Update Zoom: Ensure all participants are using the latest version of the Zoom client, as bugs or outdated software can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.
  4. Test with a New Meeting: Try creating a new meeting with breakout rooms to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if it’s a one-time glitch.
  5. Restart Devices: Have participants restart their computers and rejoin the meeting.

What happened here because that just happened for us too - it affected at least 1 breakout room where they were hearing the audio from the host's discussion in their breakout room, making it challenging to have their own discussions.

We had the same issue last night, but we were not able to resolve.

Can audio leak from one breakout room to another breakout room?

We had this recently - someone had been assigned a breakout room but hadn’t entered. Then they re-joined the main session via a different device but same passcode. The breakout room she had originally been assigned to could hear the leaders conversation with her (we weren’t in a breakout room).
I guess in future we’ll need to manually remove the person from the breakout room...

Welcome to the Zoom Community, @Valerie Challis! Under normal circumstances, audio should not pass between Zoom breakout rooms, as each room is designed to be fully isolated. If participants are joining remotely and are not sharing the same physical space, this type of issue is uncommon. You may want to review the following checks and troubleshooting steps:

  • Confirm participants’ devices: Ensure no one is logged into the meeting from multiple devices or joined to more than one breakout room simultaneously, as this could lead to unintended audio overlap.

  • Check for open microphones or other audio sources: Ask participants to verify that they do not have other Zoom meetings, Microsoft Teams calls, or audio applications running that could create cross-talk.

  • Update Zoom: Make sure everyone is using the most recent version of the Zoom client, since outdated versions or software bugs can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.

  • Test with a new meeting: Create a new meeting with breakout rooms to see if the issue occurs again. This can help determine whether it was a one-time glitch.

  • Restart devices: Ask participants to restart their computers and then rejoin the meeting. This can often resolve temporary audio conflicts.

Thanks! The multiple devices was probably the issue, and now I know the issue I will remove duplicates!
