Gallery View Switches to Speaker View After Screenshare

ON IPAD:  Up until this week, June 16, 2024, if someone shared their screen during a meeting, it would go back to gallery view, which is the correct view/setting.

Now when a participant ends a screen-share session, it goes automatically into speaker view. I have to manually find a moment to switch it back. I am a court reporter, and I have very little time to take my hands off my writer to do that.

What is going on? I'm not the only one who is having this issue. Three people I know already told me they are having it too. I just hope there is a fix.

Thanks!

Victory!

Good morning,

Upon further review, our Development team has decided to try to fix this issue in the next April release of the Zoom app for iPad.

Wish you a great week, and please let me know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,

Will it also be fixed for other devices? We have have the same issue on Android.

Hi,

Any update?

I have the same problem on Linux. Fixing for iPad won’t help me. Also, Zoom advised dropping back to an earlier release in order to avoid Zoom taking up more than 200% of my screen when I click on any setting while in a meeting.

You’re definitely not alone  a lot of iPad users have noticed this change recently. It seems like a behavior update in the Zoom iOS app rather than a device issue.

After a screen share ends, Zoom now defaults back to Speaker View instead of restoring the previous Gallery View state. From what I’ve seen, this started happening after one of the recent app updates, so it’s likely not something wrong on your end.

A few things you can try:

  • Make sure the Zoom app is fully updated (sometimes minor patches fix UI behavior).

  • Check Zoom Settings > Meetings for any display-related toggles (though currently there’s no dedicated “return to previous view” option).

  • If possible, submit feedback directly through the app  when multiple professionals (like court reporters) report workflow disruption, Zoom tends to prioritize fixes.

Unfortunately, at the moment there doesn’t appear to be a setting to force it to stay in Gallery View automatically after screen share ends. It really does seem like a design change rather than a bug.

Hopefully Zoom addresses this soon, especially since hands-free workflow is critical in your line of work.

Thanks for your reply, but you must have missed that I’m talking about seeing the problem on Linux, not iPad.

Ah, thanks for clarifying you’re right, I misunderstood earlier.

If you’re seeing this issue on Linux, then it’s likely related to the Linux client version rather than any iPad-specific behavior. A few things you can check:

  1. Make sure you’re running the latest version of the app for Linux. Older builds sometimes have UI quirks or missing features.

  2. Confirm whether you’re using the native package (deb/rpm) or a Flatpak/Snap version some sandboxed versions behave differently.

  3. Try logging out and back in, or testing with a different display server (Wayland vs X11), as that can sometimes affect UI behavior.

  4. If possible, test the web version in your browser to see if the issue persists there that helps determine if it’s client-specific.

You’re not alone  several iPad users have reported the same behavior recently. It appears to be a change in how the Zoom iOS app handles view switching after screen sharing ends. Instead of restoring the previous Gallery View, it now defaults back to Speaker View.

Unfortunately, there isn’t currently a setting to force it to return automatically to Gallery View. A few things you can try:

  • Make sure your Zoom app is fully updated (in case a patch fixes it).

  • Check in-meeting settings (three dots → Meeting Settings) to confirm Gallery View is enabled.

  • Submit feedback directly through the Zoom app  when multiple professionals report workflow disruption (especially court reporters), it increases the chance of a fix.

For now, it does seem like an app behavior change rather than something wrong with your device.
