Question

Download video with captions

I recorded a class lecture with transcripts/closed captioning. If I access the video in the cloud, the captions appear; however, when I download the video from the cloud, the captions are not visible and are stored as a separate file. Is there a way to download the video with the captions so I don't need to do additional editing? The captions are correct and I'd love to be able to share the video in my Canvas course without having to do additional work. This is a really important feature.

Welcome to the Zoom Community, @danitu.

Zoom doesn't "bake" the captions onto the video, but I think there are a number of sites that will do this for you.  If these videos are from your own account, download the MP4 video file and the cc.vtt Closed Caption file, and see if you can find a place to do that for you.

Another option is check and see if you can upload the VTT file to your video hosting site; many of them will take the vtt file and the show the "CC" icon to allow the viewer to select whether they want to see it or not.

The Canvas LMS supports uploading videos and adding caption files to the videos in Canvas.
Contact your school’s Canvas support resources if you don’t know how to do this.

It's not that simple. Most video hosting platforms host two seperate files to create captions.

  1. The video file.
  2. The caption file.

The server combines them for you to watch in the player as you watch them stream from the server to your computer.  The video file does not contain the caption file as a complete unit.
