Connectivity issues in meetings using my Phonak Roger On 3 as both the headset speaker and headset microphone
2026.9.9
For some time now, I have been having connectivity issues using my Phonak Roger On 3 hearing aid attachment in meetings. This has been going on for several months, but did not happen when I first starting using the hearing aid attachment. I have even sent off my attachment to the Veterans Affairs repair depot in Colorado, giving them details of what was happening, and they supposedly “repaired” the attachment, but the issue continues. I even have talked to the Phonak hearing aid company’s tech support, but they could offer no fix. The last suggestion was to talk to Zoom about the issue and see if there was something they could do, so voila….
This does not happen when using the attachment to listen to music via the internet, either via a music app or on YouTube; it only happens on Zoom:
- I connect my Roger On 3 attachment to my PC via hardwired connection. After turning the attachment on, I connect to the zoom call and most of the time (no all), zoom recognizes my attachment. But, unlike my standard PC’s speaker and microphone (via the video unit) being recognized once, the Roger On 3 attachment is recognized twice: first reading “Headset Earphone (2 – Roger On 3)” (evidently, since my unit was repaired by the VA, it is seen as a second unit, i.e., the “2” part; but it happened before that unit was sent in for repair); and again as “Same as system ((Headset Earphone (2 – Roger On 3). It does the same thing with microphone: seeing it twice, just substitute the world Microphone for Headset.
- During the call, I am connected and listening to the call into my hearing aids and the connectivity drops. I go to the Audio button on the zoom screen and choose the selection not being used for the attachment (either picking from “Headset” to “Same as..” or vice versa) and the audio into my hearing aid comes right back on. I can see this happen as there is a display on my attachment that shows an “headset” icon when connected and a “microphone” icon when connect there: these disappear when the connection drops, but are reestablished when the alternate selection is made.
- In all of this, the attachment is still, the hardwire is not moving, and I cannot see a physical reason for the dropping of the connection. I just have to select the alternate and I’m back in business. This is very annoying when listening, but it is very detrimental when speaking as no one else can hear me and they just see my lips moving with no sounds (when the video is on). Many times, I just have to quit using the attachment and switch to the PC’s standard microphone and speakers, but their quality is so inferior to the sound I get from my hearing aids that I miss quality and even words at times (I still try and read lips so as to not miss anything).
- Please advise when I should do. I would be willing to talk to a person on the phone while we try and adjust or modify something in zoom on-line at the same time. Anything we try would be great. Please advise…..
