Auto-updates forcing the laptop to restart

Hi All,

I work for an MSP and recently it was brought to our attention that Zoom Workplace itself forces the device to perform a restart after we deploy an update remotely.

This happens even when using parameters that are meant for MSI packages (for example /norestart).

Has anyone found a way to prevent the update from forcing the device to restart?

Please advise.

Thanks.

Hello @Gabriel Rivera,

Welcome to the Zoom Community! We’re glad to have you here!

Zoom’s guidance for IT administrators is as follows:

  • The Zoom MSI installer itself does not explicitly force a restart. If a restart occurs, it is typically due to Windows Installer behavior when files in use cannot be updated without a reboot.
  • Using the /norestart parameter should prevent the installer from automatically restarting the device. However, if the update cannot complete without a restart (for example, if the Zoom process or related files are locked), Windows may still prompt for or require a restart after the installation.
  • To minimize the chance of a forced restart, ensure that all Zoom processes are closed before deploying the update. You can do this by stopping the Zoom process (e.g., via a script) prior to running the installer.
  • There is no Zoom-specific MSI property that overrides Windows Installer’s default behavior regarding locked files and restarts.

For more details, see the official Zoom MSI deployment documentation:

If you are still experiencing forced restarts despite using /norestart and ensuring Zoom is not running, it may be due to other system or Windows Installer factors outside of Zoom’s control.
