audio static on zoom meetings

Recently I've started noticing static (and others hear it too) in meetings when others are sharing or if  I am.

It may be related to zoom audio settings. I don't get any static when playing music, watching videos or during audio testing. I run Windows11 on a Lenovo Yoga with Dolby capable speakers.

I made a change to my audio settings and it went away. 😊

Try stopping then restarting the share and see if the static goes away.

Typically, this can be the result of an incorrect sampling rate. Computer audio is transmitted as a digital signal. Zoom prefers to see everyone using a sample rate of 48K. Some devices will do a sample rate of 32K. When you check audio in statistics you may see 32/48 indicating a mix of device sample rates which Zoom will try to adjust. This does not always work especially if your local sound card is set at a different sample rate than 48K.

Where do you change the sample rate in Zoom?

Welcome to the Zoom Community, @lina4801!

If you’re hearing static that both you and others can hear, and it mainly happens when someone is sharing their screen, especially with computer audio, it could be related to the Zoom app version or how Zoom is processing the audio. Try the following steps:

1. Update Zoom Workplace. Open Zoom, click your profile picture in the top-right corner, and select Check for Updates. If an update is available, install it and restart Zoom. An outdated version of Zoom can sometimes cause audio issues during screen sharing.

2. Test the Share sound settings. Start a test meeting and share your screen. First, turn Share sound on and check if the static happens. Then turn Share sound off and test again. If you have the Stereo audio option, turn it off for the test. If the static only happens when Share sound is turned on, the issue is more likely related to how Zoom is capturing or processing your computer audio.

3. Turn off Zoom’s audio processing. In Zoom, go to Profile picture → Settings → Audio. Set Suppress persistent background noise to Disable and Suppress intermittent background noise to Disable. Set Echo cancellation to Auto. If it is already set to Auto, try Aggressive instead and test again. After making the changes, join another test call to see if the static is still there.

4. Try a different speaker and microphone. Go to Zoom → Settings → Audio and temporarily select a different Speaker and Microphone. For example, if you normally use your computer’s built-in speakers and microphone, try using a headset instead. If the static disappears after switching devices, the issue may be related to the original audio device, its driver, or how Zoom is interacting with it.

Tip: Change one setting at a time and test after each change. This makes it easier to figure out which setting is causing the static.
