Zoom Workplace update: I want the old chat where I can see all the private messages at one glance - any workaround?

Hi everyone,

I'm running into a frustrating issue with chat handling since the latest Zoom Workplace updates, and I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution or if this is a known bug.

Previously, we could manage participant chat settings smoothly. However, we're now experiencing two major pain points during meetings:

  1. Split Chat Windows: When we set participants to message the "Host and Co-hosts only," individual chats now open as separate, separate threads instead of staying consolidated within one window.

  2. Missing Settings: The old “Meeting chat - Private group messages” toggle no longer seems available in the settings to enable or disable.

This makes it extremely difficult to chat privately with individual participants during a live meeting while keeping everything organised and private.

Has anyone else noticed this, or found a way to keep participant chats unified under the current version? For a while it worked when we were using older version of Zoom, but with the latest Zoom update the same problem arose again. Any advice from the community or staff would be hugely appreciated!

      Hi,

      I can see why this is frustrating, especially if the older chat behavior worked well for your meeting workflow. Since the private group messages setting has disappeared and the chats are now being split into separate threads, it sounds like the recent Workplace update may have changed how those participant conversations are handled.

      I would check whether the same behavior happens with a newly created meeting and with the latest Zoom desktop client, just to rule out a meeting-specific setting or an older client configuration. If it does, I would report it as a regression and include the exact Zoom Workplace version, since that could help confirm whether the old private-message behavior is still supported or was intentionally changed.

        Recent updates seem to have made both the app and account settings much more complicated than they need to be. I recently noticed that the account settings now split across different pages for the Workspace and Zoom meetings. The terminology was already confusing enough, and it's gotten even less clear with each update. I really hope Zoom streams things down to be more user-friendly and simple (something Apple does so well 😂).

        Still haven’t found any ways to revert the chat back to how it was. I’m considering to download the older Zoom versions because that seems to help and the old functions are retained.

        HI ​@RESETS 

        I know how frustrating it is. There are serveral use cases that still get me wishing I could go back.

        PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL AN OLD VERSION.

        I am pretty sure this will not wortk becuase ZOOM updated the chat window and going back versions is not going to fix that.

        Zoom are still discussing and looking at all the ways that we use the chat and engineering dept said they are still lokking at ways to make EVERYONE happy. Further tweaks could be coming.

        As someone responsible for creating a public meeting summary, how am I supposed to find all the various chat threads to include them in a summary? Am I supposed to hunt down colleagues to find their chat record and share it with me? AI gets the content wrong so is not trustworthy, even with a Q&A summary template. Shouldn’t the host be able to have a record of every chat thread? Is there a way to turn off private chat completely in order to avoid relevant public meeting content disappearing into a hole? Zoom was always so good and user-friendly and things are really messy right now. Most of my clients default to Teams which I have strenously resisted myself but this latest Zoom transformation is radical and very unfriendly to users. Plus, you launched it before having thorough web support material so users could easily make a speedy transition.
