Stop Pasted URLs Converting to Page Name

Zoom Workplace recently updated to version 7.0.5 and while some of the unwanted changes were easy to fix - I don’t use a touchscreen computer, so defaulting to fat-finger mode instead of compact layout is frustrating - there is one thing that I cannot find a setting for and the manual steps to undo it every single time are also not user-friendly. That being when I paste URLs now, rather than simply becoming a link the URL is replaced with the pre-fetched title of the destination web page.

If I wanted to do this, there is already a button to make “custom” links. Undoing it every time I paste a URL - so the recipient can easily see the URL, as well as the page title if they have exercised their user choice to enable link previews - is a completely unnecessary extra few clicks on a hovering toolbar that frequently jumps away as I’m about to click on it. The fact it doesn’t remember that I’ve set it to “link” is incredibly frustrating.

Also, with the ever-increasing risks of phishing, hiding the URL by default is not very security-conscious.

How do I stop Zoom from rewriting my messages without my consent?

Hi Daniel, thanks for the detailed writeup. We hear you that not everyone prefers replacing links with titles. There isn’t a workaround to share with you at this time, but we'll look into how to make it a persistent user preference.

Appreciate the feedback.

Agreed with Daniel. This feature is awful.  Every link I paste is behind a login so every title just looks like a login page and is totally unhelpful.  I’d like the option to opt out of titles.  If I wanted that I would just add a link to some text.

Agreed, exact same situation as Walker. This is a sudden annoyance for our entire team. We paste links into chat all the time to Jira tickets, which when now converted by Zoom, just say “Jira” because Zoom cannot log in to get more details. We now have to manually edit the links each time, or add the ticket id next to them.

I agree. This is a huge frustration. Most on our team has brought this up to me since everyone wants to turn it off.

Agreed with all those above.  Security and usability concerns.  As a Product Owner I know not every decision is perfect, but guys this default of converting URLs to page names is going over like a lead balloon in our organization.  The majority of the links we share don’t have uniquely resolvable page names by Zoom.  I’d suggest either changing the default behavior or adding a toggle in the Chat preference section (next to Show link preview) that defaults to off and reads something like “Show Page Names” with a tooltip that describes that the original link/URL will be displayed by default.  I’m as aware as anyone how quickly Settings get out of hand as a product grows, but if customer satisfaction is important, you have to do these sorts of things.

Thanks for listening.

This “feature” has proven to be extremely annoying. It’s made worse by the interface to switch back seeming to break (or respond counterintuitively - I dearly hope it’s intended behavior, but I cannot make that assumption) to clicking.

I agree this is a frustrating change, especially when you need to see the actual URL for security reasons. Check under Zoom Workplace Settings > Team Chat > Compose/Chat settings for anything related to link previews or rich text formatting, but Zoom may have made this behavior part of the newer client and removed the toggle. If there’s no setting available, the best option is to report it through Zoom feedback, enough users requesting a “paste URLs as plain links” option may get it added back.

Honestly, this drives me up the wall. It's such a needless annoyance every single time, and I'd love nothing more than a simple way to just turn it off. A few people on my team have grumbled about it to me as well, so I know I'm not the only one losing patience with it.
