Remove the red dot notification from Dock generated by Team Chat

This red dot from the Zoom dock icon needs to go. It entirely bypasses the system preferences, even if you disable badges and notifications the red dot persists as long as you have unread Team Chats.

This is entirely unnecessary and horrible UX design.

Thanks for raising this — we completely understand how disruptive the red dot experience can be, especially when it doesn’t align with system notification settings.

We’ve addressed this in Zoom 7.0.0. The red dot indicator is now aligned with the app’s notification permission: if Zoom’s notification permission is disabled at the OS level, the in-app red dot will no longer be shown.

This change is intended to give users more control and ensure a more consistent experience with system preferences.

If you continue to see any inconsistencies after updating, please let us know — we’d be happy to investigate further.

That red dot can definitely be a distraction! Since disabling system-level notifications didn’t do the trick, you’ll need to toggle the setting directly within the Zoom app itself.

Try this:

  • Open your Zoom Desktop Client.

  • Click your Profile Picture and go to Settings.

  • Select the Team Chat (or Chat) tab on the left sidebar.

  • Scroll down to the Unread Messages section.

  • Uncheck the box that says "Show unread message badge for channels" (or "Show unread message count on icon in Dock/Taskbar").

If it still persists, try clicking the "Mark all as read" option at the top of your chat list to "reset" the badge.

+1000 for this. This has got to be a violation of the macOS terms of service. Get rid of it!! We are already on the fence about using zoom given how bloated the app is getting. Blatant UX violations like this do not help.

100% YES.  I am so sick of all of these NOTIFICATIONS WHEN I HAVE EVERY SINGLE ONE TURNED OFF IN OS X AND IN ZOOM!  I absolutely HATE this app because it won’t shut up!

Any update here? This is v annoying and honestly is a driving factor in making me stop using zoom

Hi @opusrae, Sorry heard that. you can upgrade zoom to 7.0.0, than turnoff Zoom app notification. the red dot will disappear.

Thanks! That did make it so that I don’t get a badge icon on the zoom app anymore, but it still appears in the chat tab within the app itself, even though I have all notifications and badges turned off

When is this going to be fixed? Support has said March, it is now closing in on June. It is extremely annoying from a power user’s perspective. I can’t override in the notification settings.

Hi @Marshall Hunt , You can try disable zoom allow notifications, it’s will not disable red dot for zoom app

Hi Groot, I’m aware of this setting. But that doesn’t remove non-numbered notifications. That’s the whole point of this thread. I’ve had notifications disabled for months and the notification dot still shows.

I can understand the frustration honestly. If system-level notification badges are disabled, apps probably shouldn’t override that preference independently. Persistent indicators like that can become more distracting than helpful, especially for people trying to keep a cleaner workspace or reduce notification fatigue.
