breakout room private chat

Some participants were unable to send private chat messages to another in the same breakout. Would say the recipient was not in the room. Ruined the activity for us :( any ideas why that happened?

    Hi @Kathy Piazza,

Thank you for reaching out and joining the community! That “recipient is not in the room” behavior usually points to Zoom thinking the other person isn’t currently in the same breakout session (even if they appear to be).

A few common causes to check:

    1. Breakout-room chat scope / private chat settings
    • In the meeting, click Chat and check whether Participants can chat with: is restricted (for example, host only, or limited).
    • Also check whether private chat is disabled for the meeting/account. If private chat is off, participants can get odd/limited targeting behavior.
    1. Participants were actually in different places (briefly)
    • If someone moved between breakout rooms, rejoined, or got disconnected/reconnected, their chat “presence” can lag. During that window, private messages can fail with wording like that.
    1. Client version mismatch (most common in practice)
    • If some users are on older Zoom app versions (especially mobile), breakout + private chat can behave inconsistently. Updating everyone to the latest Zoom app often fixes it.

One key note: private chats between participants aren’t visible to the host and won’t appear in the saved chat transcript if you save chat, so it’s hard to verify after the fact.
