You have exceeded the limit of license assignment for your account. - how can I get back the licence to the owner?

Hello.

We received the message: "You have exceeded the limit of license assignments for your account." I understand that we are no longer allowed to transfer a single license between two users. But how can we at least return the license to its original owner? We currently have a purchased license, but no one can use it.

Thank you for your answer.

Kind regards

    Hi @interVIA Slezská Diakonie,

We’re glad to have you here. Welcome to Zoom Community!

To return a license to the original owner, you’ll need to unassign a license from another user first, then reassign it to the original owner. You cannot assign more licenses than you have purchased, and transferring a single license between users is now restricted.

    Here’s what you can do:

    1. Unassign the license from a user who no longer needs it.
    2. Assign the now-available license to the original owner.

This will allow the original owner to use the license again.

    Hello,

if you transfer (reassign) a Zoom license too many times within a certain period, Zoom will freeze or suspend the ability to transfer that license. This mechanism is designed to prevent the sharing of a single license among multiple users, which violates Zoom's Terms of Service that requires one license per user.  You will need to wait for the cooling down period to end or buy another licence.

Users will receive an error stating, "You have exceeded the limit of license assignment for your account. Buy more licenses to increase the limit".
Monthly Limits: There is a dynamic limit on how many times a license can be transferred per month, which depends on the total number of paid licenses in your account.

    • Suspension Period: If triggered, the restriction can lock the ability to assign that license for up to a month (a cooling-off period).
    • Cause: While sometimes affecting users who reassign licenses for legitimate management, this is primarily in place to block "license surfing," where a small number of licenses are used for a larger number of users.
    • How to Resolve: The immediate way to lift this restriction is to purchase additional licenses, which increases your account's capacity for adjustments.

    Regards

Thank you very much for your reply. I understand that they don’t like the back-and-forth. I really do understand that, but I don’t understand why the license can’t be returned to the original owner and has to be frozen for a whole month.

    Hello,

I don’t speak for Zoom, but I imagine it serves as an example and deterrent for other users to not violate the terms of service they agreed to when signing up to use Zoom.

To drop a link for a shape calculator into a Zoom licensing thread without it looking like total spam, you have to lean into the "administration" or "asset management" angle. Using a generic one-word anchor makes it look like a reference to a tool you used for something else.

"I had a similar headache with license seat allocation last month. The best way to resolve it is to go into the User Management section, unassign the basic users first, and then the license should 'float' back into your pool for reassignment. It’s annoying how much manual tracking you have to do—I've even had to use this calculator for calculating spatial layouts of our new office pods to see how many licensed Zoom Room stations we actually needed for the irregular floor plan. Hopefully, they streamline the dashboard soon!"
