Active speaker not being shown on screen in Zoom Room

We have encountered a slightly strange scenario with our Zoom Room's set up whereby, the active speaker window does not show the active speaker in that particular room.

Let's say we have a meeting room with 3 participants

Meeting Room A, which is configured:

  • To display a thumbnail view when no content is shared
  • To display a thumbnail view when content is being shared

Meeting Room B, which is configured:

  • To display a thumbnail view when no content is shared
  • To display a thumbnail view when content is being shared

User C, who is joining the meeting using the laptop and using the latest version of the Zoom client app.

All three users are connected to one common meeting, and all users are seeing the meeting in a thumbnail view with the participants at the top of the screen, and a large active speaker window below that.

The meeting begins and the presenter in Meeting Room A speaks, and then hands over to Meeting Room B and that speaker then speaks.

However, the audience see different things.

In Meeting Room A the audience sees the active speaker in Meeting Room B in the active speaker window - Which is the correct behaviour

User C sees the active speaker in Meeting Room B  in the active speaker window - Which is also the correct behaviour

Meeting Room B continues to see the active speaker as Meeting Room A which is the incorrect behaviour as they should be seeing the speaker in Meeting Room B since they are active, the thumbnail at the top of the screen also highlights Meeting Room B so recognises that this user is the active speaker.

Why would there be a case where the active speaker does not display in Meeting Room B?  This is the scenario that we have, and we cannot work out why this is happening.

Self-view is not included in Active Speaker logic, so Meeting Room B will continue to see the last active speaker that is not itself in the active speaker position.

While Zoom Workplace (desktop client) does have an option to include yourself as an active speaker on your local view, Zoom Rooms do not:

You could most likely get around this by having a host manually spotlight whoever needs to be shown as the active speaker at any given time.

However, I do agree that Zoom Rooms should at least have the option to change this behavior if desired - please be sure to submit a formal feature request to Zoom Support so that their development team can consider it for a future release.
