entering letter password on phone keys

Tried entering letter password with phone keys, using corresponding number for the key.  Didn't work that way.  So how do I enter a letter password on phone keys?

If the password is used to access advanced settings on the phone, you would select mode and choose from options:

Poly Phones

1 = Abc

2 = ABC

3 = abc

4= 123

Yealink Phones

Access Advanced – Admin Password

Softkey – press these keys to select which format you want.  If abc is displayed and you want, a number, then press this key until you see 123.
