Zoom tells me that my phone number doesn't exist?

On a recent info screen, Zoom asked me for my phone number. But Zoom responds that the phone number doesn't exist.

Is Zoom expecting a special Zoom phone number?

It just asks for "phone number"

I gave my actual phone number, and got "phone number does not exist".

Confused!
