Cisco 9800 Series Desk Phones (9841, 9851, 9861, 9871)

The Cisco 9800 series of desk phones have been out for about a year now but I am not seeing any mention of them on the big cloud VOIP phone providers like Zoom, 8X8, RingCentral, Nextiva, etc.  My rep tells me an internal roadmap shows them as possibly being certified in June 2025. We are very seriously contemplating switching to Zoom phone and the hardware is a big element of the switch away from our legacy Avaya on prem PBX. So far, we are very impressed with Zoom Phone. We've been testing the Poly Edge phones and they are nice, but the Cisco 8800 and 9800 series devices seem just a tad higher quality, maybe more substantial, etc.I like the larger buttons. We like the Poly Edge phones, but if given a choice I'd probably pick the Cisco phones after holding both in my hands. I don't want to deploy the 8800 series (they are certified on Zoom) because they are 10 years old and lack certain modern features like Zoom App Call Control (dialing on PC in Zoom app and it dials your desk phone where your headset is attached). They would probably be OK, but I'd feel bad deploying something 10 years old and would probably regret it.  I'd be really curious if anyone else is waiting patiently for the Cisco 9800 series phones to be supported.

hi @NorCal-IT

I can not find any cisco 9800 desk phones with multi-platform firmware.  As far as I can see, the existing 9800 desk phones support cisco products such as cisco unified call manager, webex and broadworks. Interestingly, cisco 9800 phones also support asterisk.

You might consider contacting cisco sales to obtain sku for 9800 desk phones with multi-platform firmware.

You may find this zoom support article on supported desk phone features of interest.  If there are certain features required for your desk phones, you can check to see which phones support those features.  The phones that support the most zoom features are hp/poly and Yealink.  I do not think anyone knows for sure what the impact of changes in tariffs will have on imported desk phones.

this is the zoom support article on desktop app call control which is supported on hp/poly, Yealink and audiocodes.

Zoom phone certified devices states:

Zoom Phone Certified Hardware

I cannot find any ordering information (sku) for cisco 9800 series phones with multi-platform support.

Cisco’s desk phone 9800 series data sheet shows platform support for:

I have a bank client that converted from avaya ip office to zoom phone about three years ago.  The bank replaced 400 avaya digital phones with hp/poly vvx phones and was very satisfied.

On the other hand, many enterprises are going away from desk phones and using zoom workplace clients for windows, ios and android.  If a user really wants a desk phone, the user must justify the expense.

Did my response answer your question? If so, please don't forget to mark the reply as an accepted solution.

You don't need multi-platform firmware on the new Cisco 9800. The 8800 series you did (like the CP-8851-3PCC-K9), but the new 9800 series support "third-party cloud calling platforms" right out of the box supposedly. Looks at the Cisco documentation here.

It say's "The Desk Phone 9800 Series reduces the complexity of purchasing, deploying, managing, and training. To further simplify, you can use one device for Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Webex Calling, Broadworks, or other 3rd party cloud calling platforms."
