Title. I'm taking a Shakespeare class and we watch clips from movies based off the plays sometimes. Every time a video is shared, I can only ever hear the voices. No background sounds or music, just complete silence unless a character is talking. What could be the problem here?

It sounds like you are not doing a proper SCREEN SHARE of the video and/or you are sharing the audio via the mic channel of Zoom. There is also the possibility that the OS audio system has a feature turned on that is optimizing voice. Without knowing the process you are doing I can only guess. I screen share video files and video from external hardware all the time without any audio issues. You might want to try running the videos via OBS Studio and project to a second screen then screen share the projected video.
