Terrible echo in Zoom meeting

I was hosting a Zoom meeting the other day and one specific participant was having a terrible echo every time he tried to talk. He originally had an external mic but couldn't get his audio correct so he was just using the built in computer speakers and microphone and it was making terrible feedback sounds. And then again tonight I hosted a meeting with only one participant and she was having the same issue just using her iPad. Any advice on how they can fix this? Thank you!

Echo problems during Zoom meetings typically occur when participants use built-in speakers and microphones simultaneously, creating an audio feedback loop.

These solutions should resolve the echo issues and improve your meeting experience significantly.

Immediate Solutions for Participants
- Use headphones or earphones - This is the most effective solution as it prevents the microphone from picking up speaker audio
- Lower speaker volume - Reduce the volume to minimize feedback
- Increase distance - Move further away from the device or adjust microphone positioning

Host Controls You Can Use
- Mute participants when they're not speaking to prevent continuous echo
- Ask participants to use "Push to Talk" feature if available
- Enable "Suppress background noise" in audio settings

Device-Specific Tips
- For computer users: Check that only one audio device is active
- For iPad/tablet users: Recommend using wired headphones or AirPods
- Disable audio enhancements in device sound settings that might cause interference

Prevention for Future Meetings
- Send participants a pre-meeting checklist including headphone requirements
- Test audio with problematic participants before the main meeting starts
- Consider using Zoom's "Original Sound" feature for better audio quality

I hope this resolves the issue. Please let us know if it works.
