Screen sharing

Hello and I've watched the screen sharing video a few times now.  My question is what to do if the iPhone/ipad choice doesn't show up on the menu to chose what screen you would like to share?  The iPad is plugged into my laptop and the only option I get is to share my desk top.  How do you get the cable option to show up?  Thank you.
