Mac installer location / hint / suggestion

I recently tried to fix the update failing 10004 bug by uninstalling and reinstalling desktop client. 

Result: error on reinstall

Issue- after some experimentation I remembered that I download everything from Chrome to a custom folder (to share across devices via a cloud service), vs the standard Mac System download folder

I dragged the installer to the standard folder and everything worked fine.

I suspect this may be why I have problems with updates, but as I don't see those as files I can't move them

Any suggestions on whether to worry about a further fix on my side (I can't change my workflow and move my standard download location, that's 10 years of an excellent solution that has until this point never created an issue)
