I recently tried to have a meeting and when I joined, the host couldn't hear me and I couldn't hear him. I tried every fix I could come up with in the short time before we gave up. I tested the audio devices in the app and they worked. I checked permissions and whether my audio was turned up. I looked to see if either of us were muted in the app and there was no indication of that. I restarted my computer. I re-installed zoom. I used the browser instead of the app. I used a different computer. I used my phone. I used multiple audio devices on each of the computer/phones I used. And I've used each of those devices for a hundred or more zoom meetings before this so I know my computer can handle it. And the host has regularly used zoom to record meetings as well and said he'd never encountered this problem.
What else was there I could do?

Joining you with this issue.
1. recent zoom desktop app update. Since then--
2. checked all settings.
3. tested mic and speakers IN ZOOM and nearly blasted myself off my seat.
4. tested mic and speakers in Windows...also loud!
5. open a zoom meeting that I was hosting...barely hear a thing
6. and also clients asking, "is your room dark or do you have a filter on your background?" NO FILTERS but had to turn ont he spotlight so the client could see my face at least.
Is it Windows or is it Zoom?
Next option uninstall Zoom?

As an audio and broadcast engineer I can tell you that computer audio can be very complicated.
Here is insight to setting up original sound.
https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb&sysparm_article=KB0064198
Note that original sound has to be turned on in 2 places. Don't forget to click the Original Sound for Musicians button to toggle this on or off in the top-left corner of the meeting window for the desktop client. Also, check your OS for audio enhancements and be sure they are turned off.
