Meeting Summary not trigger recording.transcript_completed event

I noticed that when "auto_start_meeting_summary" is set to false, the recording is not started.transcript_completed webhook event doesn't get fired. And I don't see my transcript in the UI under Recordings and Transcripts > Transcript. Is this intended? I can get transcripts via the api https://api.zoom.us/v2/meetings/{meeting_id}/recordings. Why is it that not enabling a meeting summary prevents a transcript event from firing?

Hi @hvo    - Hope you're doing well.

Yes, this behavior is intended.Whenauto_start_meeting_summary = false. The meeting summary workflow—which also controls the automatic recording and transcript generation—is not triggered. Because the recording process never starts, Zoom does not produce a transcript file, and therefore the recording.transcript_completed webhook event is never fired. This also explains why no transcript appears in the Zoom web portal under Recordings and Transcripts > Transcript .

Zoom only generates transcripts when a meeting is recorded to the cloud. If the meeting is not recorded, there is no transcript asset for Zoom to process or expose through the webhook system. The /meetings/{meeting_id}/recordings API endpoint returns transcript data only for meetings that have actual cloud recordings; it does not include live or standalone transcripts that are not tied to a recording.

In short:

  • Disablingauto_start_meeting_summarystops the recording and transcript workflow.
  • Without a cloud recording, no transcript file is created.
  • Consequently, therecording.transcript_completedevent and transcript UI entry do not appear.

This is the expected design of Zoom’s meeting summary and recording integration.

    Hope this helps!
