Why does Zoom reduce video quality during long meetings even with stable internet?

Hi everyone,

I had a quick question about meeting performance and was hoping someone in the community might have some insight.

Sometimes during longer meetings, the video quality seems to automatically adjust or drop even when the internet connection appears stable. I understand that the platform adapts quality based on network conditions, but I’m curious if there are specific settings or best practices that help maintain more consistent video quality during meetings.

For example:

  • Are there recommended settings for better video stability?

  • Does enabling or disabling certain features affect overall video performance?

  • Are there any tips for optimizing Zoom for longer meetings with multiple participants?

Would appreciate hearing how others manage this or if you’ve found settings that work best in your setup.

Thanks in advance!

hi @tom cary

Zoom does not reduce quality of video, unless the demands of the users cause it.

Quality can be reduced by

Users on poor connections

Users on machines on contested wifi

Users running lots of other apps while using zoom and regrading performance,
The recording quality depends on the quality of the person sending the content.
You could consider upgrading your quality to 72-p or 1080p, but that is dependent on your subscription level.
Pro is better and Business Accounts allows 1080p

Please like and mark as the solution if this helps

All the best

Having high-speed connections doesn't always translate to a flawless Zoom call because real-time video cares more about consistency (jitter) than raw speed.

Here are a few targeted tips to help stabilize your quality during those longer sessions:

  • Check the "Middle Mile": Your ISP might have a "perfect" path to a speed-test server but a congested handoff point to Zoom’s data centers. If your Settings > Statistics show over 2% packet loss while your internet seems "fine," the issue is likely your ISP's routing, not your house.

  • The "Weakest Link" Variable: Zoom is adaptive. If a participant on a bad connection starts speaking or sharing their screen, Zoom may downscale the entire meeting’s resolution to prevent them from dropping out entirely.

  • Toggle Hardware Acceleration: Under Settings > Video > Advanced, try toggling hardware acceleration. Sometimes your GPU and Zoom’s latest 2026 encoding don’t play nice, leading to "artificial" lag that looks like a network issue.

  • Version-Specific Bugs: There have been recent reports of memory leaks in version 6.7.x (especially on macOS). If your video drops after an hour, it might be a local resource leak rather than your bandwidth.

For long marathons, try switching from Gallery View to Speaker View to reduce the processing load on your device.
