Messages deleted automatically after a year

Why am I not being able to see my message history after 1 year? I am on a desktop and just recently all my messages over 1 year have been deleted!! I had some very important documents saved there that I kept for memory and now they are gone. How can I retrieve them? I am a basic user on the latest version. please help.
