Question

Let me disable "smart dash" and "smart quote" features completely

Hello, there.

I am using Zoom in our engineering team.

I often input "--" to Zoom chat, as a prefix of some software's option, to instruct my team members.

I am really bothered because Zoom always replaces "--" with "—" automatically.

I found that I could disable this feature from the context menu (right-clicking menu).

However, this configuration is saved only on current chats or meetings.

All the members of our team are also facing this problem.

Is there a way to disable this feature completely?

Any feedback on this topic?
This is really annoying and I would be also interested in this.

(BTW: could you be so kind to point me to the "context menu" to at least disable this feature on the current chat?)

Hello,

To disable the smart chat features right click on the chat box and on Substitutions you may disable the Smart Dashes/Text Replacement or other features.

I don't know how to impact it globally for sure, but I suspect it may be tied to the operating system in use. Many Zoom features rely on the operating system preferences.

Here’s how to do that on a Mac.

Use smart quotes and dashes

Automatically convert straight quotation marks to typographical (“curly”) ones, and double hyphens to em dashes (—).

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

  2. Go to Text Input on the right, then click Edit.

  3. Turn on “Use smart quotes and dashes.”

If you’re working in an app, you can also choose Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions, then select the Smart Quotes and Smart Dashes checkboxes.

  4. To choose a style for smart quotes, choose styles from the “For double quotes” and “For single quotes” pop-up menus, then click Done.

Tip: To apply smart quotes and dashes to existing text, select the text, choose Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions, make sure the Smart Dashes and Smart Quotes checkboxes are selected, then click Replace in Selection. To use them in the entire document, click Replace All.

Thanks for the feedback @Frank_TB.

Unfortunately - as reported in https://community.zoom.com/t5/Team-Chat/How-to-disable-automatic-bullet-list-generation-in-a-chat/td-p/180719 - I do not seem to have access to this menu.

Any hint on how to enable/access the "Substitutions" menu would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Zoom v. 6.0.0.37205 under Windows 10.

Hi @Frank_TB ,

Not sure what you mean with:
"Is Substitutions enabled in your operating system preferences?"

Where can I find my operating system preferences?

(Are you talking about some generic Windows settings?)

A quick search about "Substitutions" did not return anything neither in the Zoom web account settings, nor in the Zoom client settings (nor in the Windows setting FWIW).

Thanks again,
Simone
